Why are my lower wishbones rubbing on the break guard?

Lately, I have noticed that both the left and right lower wishbones have been rubbing on the break splash guard and making a horrendous noise. It has clearly been happening for some time on the LHS as there is a hole from there the wishbone has been rubbing, I'm just not sure what is causing this, bushes or what as the car is on 150,000 miles. I've looked at lower wishbones but I just want to make sure that they are the problem before putting £130 into it.

Can you get pictures? Hard to understand really as they shoukd not be near them. The end of the wishbones have the ball joint on and they're gapped from the splash gaurds.
I suspect splash gaurds are bent?

Welcome. I see your A2 is year 2002 so you have the cast steel wishbones that are hollow. Later models have cast iron hollow steel wishbones.

EDIT Corrected above and deleted rest of post as now not relevant. Sorry about that

Welcome. I see your A2 is year 2002 so you have the steel wishbones that are hollow. Later models have cast iron wishbones. The steel ones are prone to rusting from the inside and often this is first noticed when a hole appears. I think this is far more likely than rubbing. At this point it is very dangerous to drive the A2 as a sudden collapse of the suspension has occurred at least once (luckily at slow speed). A slow drive to the nearest garage avoiding pot holes may be OK (at your risk).

Many with the steel wishbones have fitted the cast iron ones although they have a disadvantage in the ball joint is integral and cannot be separately replaced should they wear.

There is a very long thread below. Read the beginning and then skip to the end to read about availability as finding replacements is getting harder (as with many A2 specific components).

I think you may have it the wrong way round?
Early cars have cast wishbones. Post BJ 2002 have the pressed (hollow) ones. Certainly my 54 plate had pressed but my 02 ones are cast

Yes, that's what my bad knowledge was thinking of!

The ball joint already seems to be integral to the wishbone, so I'm not sure if it has already had replacements in the past but I haven't noticed any holes or corrosion on the wishbones themselves yet.

Here’s a photo of the wishbone, the splashguard is touching the ball joint when at full lock, and there isn’t enough room to bend the slash guard out of the way like I’ve done on the RHS.

Sounds & looks good. They look to be cast ones. Sorry, I misunderstood and thought the wishbones had the hole. So the hole is in the guard plate. They corrode as well and get thin and distorted. Maybe a large stone has got trapped and distorted it. I recall I had a stone trapped and it certainly made a din.

Mine have corroded so I bought some new ones but not fitted. They are not expensive and I've given them a coat of high strength lacquer. As the whole assembly needs dismantling I thought I would refresh the pads & disks and maybe the bearings and CV boots this year.

In the meantime for the last MOT I patched them up with some aluminium plate and epoxy and painted it all black. Didn't get a mention in the MOT.
