Widest tyre

215/35 on an 8.5

According to ETRTO, an 8.5J rim is the widest you can fit a 215/35R18 tyre to.

ETRTO approved rim widths for passenger car tyres
215/35 7.0-7.5-8.5

Toyo make a 235/30R18 which offically needs an 8.5J rim. However, it might not fit within the wheel arch to remain legal or work without rubbing.

Found an 8j x 17 rims that I am thinking of running 225/35/17 on
Will all depend on the offset or et of the wheels?
Any fouling will occur on the inner side (wheel arch liners) so you need wheels with a low et number so they sit out further giving more inner clearance which helps with bigger brakes too.

The issue then is they will likely protrude the wheel arches externally which is illegal and an mot failure, so if you did choose to go this route you would need another set of wheels for mot purposes.

The only other thing to be concerned about is if the car is lowered they could also rub on the outer arches too.

First signs of rubbing normally occurs front left inner and rear right inner wheel arch linings.

Will be tight for sure though with that size and a definite risk 👍

I am starting with 7jx16 et35 alloys with 215/40/16

See if they are up to the job in hand, plans are to move up to 225/35/17 on 8jx17 alloy believe the ET is 35 also .

215/45 16 works fine on the 7j et31 16" A1 Sport alloys which they wear as standard, as does 205/50 16 on standard suspension, so you should be fine with the 16's you propose.

The 17's will be tight though but might be just OK. Worst case scenario I would have thought is you would need to ease them out slightly with 5mm spacers 👍

Just done the calculations Brett and the 225/35/17 on an 8 inch wheel et35 will fit, but you will need to trim the inner arch liner next to the strut on the back side by a few cm.

This should help show you what you're trying to avoid and where you may need to trim without the spacers. This is right rear but still think you would struggle front left too, especially on full lock 👍

I had no rubbing at the front when I had them fitted onto a car on -25mm springs and then -60mm coilovers. Perhaps the lowering placed the wheel higher in the arch and therefore missed the section you had rubbing on.

Yes, quite possibly Steve.

What offset were the wheels and tyre and wheel size?
