Windscreen wiper

Hi all,
I have had my A2 1.4 tdi for one year now, done 15k miles and it has been the best car that I have ever had. Ok it does give a harsh ride but more than compensates for this with £35 RFL and I am getting a constant 59mpg!

I need to replace the wiper I think it may be the original (now on 45k miles) do most people go to Audi for this part or do you fit a pattern one.
Also at 45k should I be looking to replace the cambelt? and is there a service centre that could be recommended near Epping Essex. I am very interested in the variable service times.

Thanks for any help here :)

For the mechanical gurus to answer you questions effectively, you need to let them know the age of your car and whether it has a fixed or floppy style wiper ( the wipers arent always indicative of age as the previous owner might have upgraded) - usually floppy wipers are on '03 reg cars and onwards I think.
I'd reckon the cambelt probably does need changing on the age of your car alone unless youre lucky enough to have an '05 plate. :D
I think the latest info on cambelt change for the TDi is 5 years or 75k miles - whichever comes first.

A2 wiper

Hi thanks for the info. Car is a Y reg (01) A2 1.4 TDi se. Not sure what the 'floppy' wiper is.
Thanks for your quick reply. Any advice re cam belt cost also appreciated
Regards

Sean

I tend change the wiper every year as the rubber gets stiff and doesnt clear smoothly. I would change the cambelt given the cars age again just because the rubber perishes with age regardless of use. Harsh ride is fixable with the Koni FSD damper upgrade that many on the forum have done or are doing in increasing numbers!

The floppy wiper is dubbed thus, as it made from rubber and 'flops' when you lift the arm from the screen. On a Y plate you are likely to have the earlier type with metal frame and wind deflector on it. As Dan says, change it every year for optimal performance. Many owners upgrade to the floppy type as it reduces the cars tendancy to 'rock' when the full speed is on and is also more aesthetically pleasing IMHO. :D

You should budget on £350 to £450 for the cambelt change at a good independant and you are advised to replace the water pump as well when the car is stripped down to replace the belt ( that £ estimate includes this work)
Ring your local Audi dealer as well. There is competitive menu pricing for cambelt changes these days.

Hi Sean
I don't think there is an aftermarket version of the A2 wiper blade. Some occasionally appear on e.bay but they either don't fit or are more expensive than one from your Auid dealer.
The floppy blade does have some advantages over the older 'aero' style one but fitment requires a new wiper arm or a custom made adaptor from a guy on the German A2 owners club
More details of the arm and blade conversion here - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3420

Cheers Spike

As Spike posted there is no after market blade they say they are untill you check properly then its not listed(A2), plus they are only about £12 from the dealer anyway.

I changed mine to the floppy wiper, got the new style arm from a scrapyard (with used wiper) and it cleared the screen better than my new old style blade, the floppy is alot better no judder alot better and worth the effort to convert
