Wiper arm swap.

Hi guys. My windscreen has scratches on it from the wiper. I looked at the blade and seems OK.
But when I turn wipers on it doesn't clear well and makes a terrible juddering screeching sound.
I understand you have to swap over to the aero arm to use aero blades.
I just want to ask, is the swap worth it does it make a big difference or am I just creating work and cost for myself.
I also don't know how scratches would of happened. They are fairly big.
Hope someone can advise. Thank you

Paul Whittle @depronman makes refurbished wiper arms for both types. I use an aero one and my nephew uses the earlier non-aero type. More robust than originals too.

The scratches probably come from wear on the rivets at the joints of the wiper arm at the screen end - these are inside the plastic box cover on the hook-style arm, but it happens with the aero arms as well. The wear causes the metal of the wiper arm or of the wiper itself to touch the windscreen when the arm moves. The aero arms are maybe less prone to scratching the screens when they wear, because the arm sits a bit higher off the screen due to the taller blade.

You could buy a known good arm of either type from one of our resident breakers, who will test them for wear before sale. It'll be cheaper than one from outside the forum. Or you could get a refurbished hook-style arm from @depronman on here on an exchange basis for your current arm, which will never be an issue again.

As for the scratches, some form of abrasive glass rubbing polish is needed if you want to get them out. I'm sure someone on here will have a suggestion from previous experience as worn wiper arms and scratched windscreens are sadly a common occurrence on A2's

As was said already the pivots in the arm wear causing both the judder wiper movement and associated noise and lack of proper screen cleaning and eventually the glass to be scratched
I refurbish the arms with new bushes and stainless steel pins so the problem will not occurs again plus a nice coat of satin black paint to they look like new again
Audi have both types now as no longer available
The hook arm once refurbished is every bit as good as the aero arm though 30” blades are getting difficult to obtain 28” seem to be readily available and do the same job
Drop me a pm if you want a refurbished arm
I have them available ‘ex stock’ at the moment which as not been the case for months

Cheers paul

As for removing the scratches on the glass, it is possible but bloody hard work
New screen would be my answer depending on the severity of the scratches and if they are in the mot’s ‘driver field of view’
