Wiper arm upgrade.

That's done, wiper is actually of the car at the moment so I'll just pop it in a box and send it to this FY8 address?

Any prefered method?
I've boxed up your new wiper arm, tracking number

If you want to post your wiper arm to me before the new one arrives thats fine, I use Myherms as they are the only carrier that will ship these at a reasonable price

OK, I saw somewhere that you had difficulty finding good boxes so I waited for yours to arrive for reuse. Should be sent off today.

Replacement looks good, I assume you advise against greasing it and that the little rubber buffer is no longer needed?

A few drops of engine oil every 6months on the pivots is all that is needed. If you have the rubber pip then fit it. It’s there to try to prevent glass breakage if the arm is dropped onto the glass with no wiper blade fitted

Thanks for the advice!

I never had the pip, I tried to find one but it seemed like they were a part of the wiper arm. I used a bit of felt, because it was scratching the bottom of the screen, but I feel like that's just asking for trouble now.

Undo each nut two turns only then grasp the cast part of the arm near the nut and pull hard upwards and rock it Never fails

Hi Paul,

So posted the Arm this evening (recycling using the old package) Hermes ref: P6042041 you should still have my PayPal details, let me know if any addtional info required. Great service. A mate has a Golf Mk 2 and wanted to Know if you do any other cars and how much?

Just wanted to say. I ordered a new Wiper Arm from Paul and fitted it on this weekend with the old one on its way back to Paul with the exchange deal provided. impressed with the repaired arm which looks good and the new blade now cleans the screen a treat. You don't realise how poor your old arm is until you have the repaired/exchange arm. Thanks Paul great service

Hi Paul,
I would like a refurbed wiper if possible please?
I'm not certain which type mine is so I've attached a photo.
Thanks,
Martin

A slightly different take on repairing the wiper arm……..

The thing I like about fixing old machines is getting into the mind of the designer and production engineers to understand how the design came about. They were under different constraints, (time and money mostly), than a man in a shed but they can use some elaborate techniques hard to duplicate by a humble restorer. However, with only one car to fix then maybe the original design can be improved on, take the windscreen wiper for instance.

The design of the joints at the end of the wiper arms was never going to be the best, soft aluminium rivets, un-lubricated and out in all weathers were never going to last forever and next to impossible to service. Added to this the pressed shape of the L piece with the indented groove on top takes away underneath any flat thrust face for the two bearings. To work around this the bearing is a ‘top hat’ shape taking the face loading to the aluminium rivet. It works but is far from ideal.

This is what I did……….

I Pulled the wiper arms off, (with 2 leg puller), carefully drilled the heads off the rivets then as they still would not come apart sawed though the rivets and bearings to get the assembly apart. Each wiper arm was stripped of it’s original bearing and drilled through 10 mm. New bronze bushes were machined to be a press fit in each side of the arm and reamed through 8 mm. The L shaped bracket was also drilled 8 mm. The novel part of the exercise is the new shafts, they were made from bicycle brake caliper retaining nuts, basically an 8 mm tube tapped M6 with and allen key socket at one end. These were machined to length to suit the L bracket. I wanted slim pan head type screws but as these were not readily available I machined two from M6 countersunk screws. In my spares cupboard I found two plastic nut caps, cut down to suit the nut heads and also a couple of plastic caps which click into place into the screw heads, these will touch the windscreen first if the bearings wear out again and the joint becomes floppy.

Now the wiper arm works nicely again and in a couple of years or so can be easily dismantled and relubricated.

You will find that the original pins (rivets) are not aluminium but steel. They rust when water gets into the pivots and this destroys the bushing
The pin as a coating to try to prevent the rust but this wears away quickly
I’ve refurbished what now must be into the 100+ wiper arms both the newer aero arm and the original hook arm
Both suffer the same failure mode but the aero is worse as there is nothing to prevent water ingress to the bushes
For this reason I designed a 3D printed cover to keep the water out of the pivots
I also machine custom made new bushes and stainless steel pins(rivets) to eliminate the original failure mode
Theses have been available to members for some years on an exchange basis
The choice of stainless steel and the cover is the key to why my refurbished wipers don’t wear out

Cheers. Paul

Paul, I have only heard good things about your wiper arm refurbishments and if I didn't enjoy playing with my lathe I would have been another customer for you. Maybe I am mistaken on the rivet material but mine were much softer material than I would expect steel to be, too late to check as the old parts are long gone.

Hi, Just became an owner of Audi A2 and joined the forum...already finding really useful. Hi everyone. Audi A2 really fun little car, it is in need of some "maintenance", currently in the process of resolving a number of items...

....I have the old wiper arm with worn rivets..sounds like the standard issue... @depronman ... I see you offer a refurb/upgrade... can i send my arm to you for refurbing, it is already off the car?. not sure how to message you directly, only just joined forum.

Edit your post and put an @ immediately before the D of Depronman then he will see it, or send him a PM.
