After leaving over night I checked the drain screw and diesel trickled out, so diesel getting to the filter
Next make sure diesel is getting to the engine bay, found some clear pipe hardest bit was trying to work which was the feed and which was the return - eventually got fuel to the pipe and connected everything back together.
Turned over eventually started, ran for 5 seconds then died next attempt ran for a minute then died again. Next attempt, started and kept revs above 2k for 2 minutes and finally settled down.
Lessons learned: clamp fuel pipes when changing filter and if the system is fully drained then leave over night or prime by hand.
