Would anybody like to show me their A2?

Hi,
So that I get an idea of what “good” looks like, I’d be eternally grateful to any forum member in the Surrey/Sussex/western Home Counties area, who would be prepared to take me for a spin in their pride and joy. Particularly interested in the FSi and 90 TDI.
Thanks

If you’d like to compare your TDI/ FSI shortlist against a simple 1.4 petrol then I‘d be happy to oblige. It’s not fast by any stretch of the imagination and quickly runs out of torque in the Surrey Hills. Once up to speed it’s quiet and comfortable on a run but best suited to the near side or middle lane on the A3. However it‘s perfect for the school run or supermarket, while also being quick and nimble long B-roads with kart-like handling and little or no detectable understeer.

very kind of you to offer, might take up up on it although I’m pretty certain the amount of motorway driving I’ll do will make the 1.4 unsuitable for my needs.

I've got a 1.4 and an FSI - I really don't notice much difference on motorways to be honest. If anything, I find the 1.4 a little easier sitting at ...*cough* 70. The main difference is pulling away at roundabouts and the acceleration up to "70". Fsi is more economical at maintained higher speed

Hmm.... well maybe I should compare, but while it might be ok at a steady cruise I imagine you must lose out a lot on flexibility, e.g. accelerating from 50 to 70, although that’s where diesel really comes into its own.

With the FSI it is rpm that is the key to acceleration not speed. Under 3000 rpm the acceleration is pedestrian over 3000 rpm the intake manifold flaps open, fuelling changes to homogeneous mode, and the FSI is a bit more lively or is it the noise?!, at 6000 rpm it sounds frantic.

A big thanks to @PlasticMac who took me out for a drive in his FSi yesterday. It’s an absolutely superb example, very low mileage and astonishing condition, and if I were lucky enough to come across a similar one I’d have it in a flash. Hard to believe that a 16 year old car can feel as tight as my 68 reg fiesta! It also showed to me that a Sport’s ride isn’t as bad (IMHO) as a few people have made out. Firm, but still took some nasty pot holed roads with aplomb - I’ve experienced far worse.

@Malcyb ,
Thank you kind Sir!
Mac.

I agree with @Teresa that the humble 1.4 suffers asthmatic acceleration out of roundabouts or down motorway slip roads when compared to modern cars, but light weight and minimal understeer delivers joy on narrow twisty B-roads...

I'd argue it can be quite nippy, you've just got to wring it's neck to get it to do anything. Once it finally hits 3500rpm it suddenly starts moving.

I thought my own 1.4 asthmatic and then some, right up to the point I fitted a new exhaust. Now it's quite the opposite, and a real pleasure to drive.

Having been for a ride in Steve's car, I can vouch for it not being remotely asthmatic - the custom exhaust really makes a difference

I wonder what power it’s making?
