Wynns hydraulic lifter treatment

I just thought I’d share my experience of this. My 1.4 petrol was suffering from a misfire on number 2 cylinder, with the engine management light coming on after a period of idling. The car sounded quite tappety so I thought I’d try the Wynn’s treatment. I am really pleased with the results. Car is now quieter and idle is smoother and no misfire on number 2 cylinder. So far I’m impressed with the product and it has saved the considerable expense of having the top end rebuilt.

Interesting. I have a tappety FSI and and have Forte Flushing fluid. Going to try this. As you say much cheaper than rebuilding!

I had replaced the plugs and the leads to try and stop the misfire, but I had a feeling it was to do with the hydraulic lifters as it’s very tappety. I’m so pleased it’s worked.

What oil do you have in the engine? What petrol do you use? What's the mileage like?

So, has it actually stopped the tapping ??

The oil is shell helix 5w40, which has just been replaced as part of a full service. I’ve also put injector cleaner through it and tried high octane fuel. I tried the Wynn’s today and it was noticeably quieter. I’ve let it idle for 20minutes with air con on and off and no misfire yet.

Thanks. What sort of mileage has it done?

"... tried high octane fuel ... "

Just use branded (ie not supermarket) 98 or 99 (Shell Nitro for me) octane all the time. It's the fuel it was designed to use. The extra you spend on fuel will save on future problems. It'll go better too! Mac.

120,00 miles, but no service history so I’m not sure how it’s been treated.

Thanks, that likely explains it. I know my still sound AUA engine prefers 5w30 oil to 5w40 and you may want to consider that next service. Now that Shell have reintroduced it, I'm considering switching to 0w30 on my next service.

I might try the 5w30 if you think that may help next time. For now, the Wynn’s seems to have done the trick. I’ll keep people posted of any changes.

5w30 is less viscous than 5w40 and should flow better at operating temperature as a consequence.
I generally use Shell V-Power 99 RON, not so much for the octane rating, rather its excellent detergent properties: https://www.shell.co.uk/motorist/shell-fuels/shell-v-power/shell-v-power-unleaded.html
The user manual that came with my A2 specifically advised against idling the engine at cold, which advice I've always stuck with.
I see from another thread that you've now cleaned the throttle body which certainly should help.

The reason I went for the 5w40 was because of the high mileage of the engine. I thought the higher viscosity might quieten it down a little, although it may have contributed to the misfire issue. Anyway, all’s well at the moment. No engine management lights and rock steady tickover, particularly now I’ve cleaned the throttle body.
