Yellow brake pads light

Ignation on and yellow front brake pads warning on dash panel, that cable from brake pad is broken (cutted) ,but there are two wires, hmm, how is it working.

The wires are joined to turn the light off. When the pad wears it breaks the wire embedded in the pad and puts the light on
A lot of A2’s including my own have this feature disabled by shirting a couple of wires in the multi plug at the back of the instrument cluster. The other way is to joint the wires higher up the loom under the wheel of what will be the drivers side front wheel on your lhd car or under the engine bay if you retrace the loom back into the engine bay
Be very careful though as the abs wires are in the same loom and you don’t want to cut these wires

Cheers. Paul

Hmm,red wire has +12v and yellow 0, when I put the wires together, the light is still there,no fault codes, I haven t been driving for 4 monts, some repairements done, so the car should be like new one. The car is ready next week and then I have to resolve that problem too. Thanks for the advise....

That’s not unusual the wires break in the loom as it comes from the engine bay to under the wheel arch

You have to either fit the “repair loom” that replaces a fair length of the loom, or short out the two wires past the point at which the break has happened.
As the loom is constantly moving as the steering turns the break is likely to be somewhere after the point that it enters the engine bay from the wheel area.

Shorting it out sounds wrong but it is a complete loop anyway and it is only when the pads wear down so far that the wear through the wire in them and hence turn on the warning light.
Shorting the wires obviously removes the pad wear warning permanently but unless you totally neglect your car, you would be changing the pads as necessary anyway.

But the ideal solution is the “repair loom” to reinstate the warning check.

Ok the yellow cable must be broken, and that s the reason why to put cables together near the instrument cluster am I right?

Yes that is the best place to hack it if you don’t want to replace the loom

You don’t have to do the instrument cluster fix. Just follow the wiring through the grommet into the engine bay and that should be far enough back. Make a join there.

There is far less risk doing it at the back of the inst cluster. There are abs wires which you need to keep clear of and the working loom as a hard plastic sheath on it making breaking into it risky
But there any many ways to skin cat !!!

Agreed,
It is just that basic loom wiring is (to me) simpler and less technical than instrument cluster wiring.
But if the instructions are clear on the cluster option then great!

As you say as long as the cat gets skinned!?

Evening Steve & @sonicci,

I think there is enough information here to do the cluster fix.

Hi Andy

Great, thank you.

This fix must have appeared when I was “absent” from the forum for a while.

nice to know that another option is available.

I put together pin 2 and 24 on white connector, cable colours ; red and brown on instrument cluster thats not working , Hmm , some russian tells that ground pin 2 red one? The colour of another connector was green?

Case closed, what I did wrong, I cut wires red and brown and linked together pins 2 and 24 so that way I missed earth to pin 24, so I repaired connection from earth to pin 24 and let pins 2 and 24 to be linked, warning light stays off. Thanks for helping.....

Going to attempt this at the weekend...after hopefully removing the instrument cluster and removing the blue multiplug am i right in thinking i can then splice no2 wire & no24 wire together with a scotch lok ....?

.........job done?
hardest bit was removing that bit of trim on top of the steering wheel column.
Thanks for all members info on this subject?
