You don’t know until you buy one

Hi I’m Pete but got my nickname Motoman when I was in the army many many years ago. I never considered an A2 until my A1 got involved with a Shogun jumping the lights, a good friend offered me her A2 for a very good price and I am now a very proud owner.
I love it, a real car not a gadget with wheels. No problems, comfortable and just a few tiny niggles. My service flap will not lock and it kept in place with a lump of blue tack, it has useful attachments called a spare wheel and a toolkit. No rust, loads of character and at 18 years old in a lot better condition than me. The wealth of knowledge show here is breathtaking, congratulations to all the experts and new owners like me for producing a site for sore eyes.

Welcome! You’ll love it here.

Does the little catch for the service flap perhaps stick in the tube? They can get a bit dirty and not spring back out to catch the flap. Have a look behind the hook for a little lipstick tip sized wedge. Mine needed a bit of wd40 and some exercising and finally some lubrication to reliably fulfil its purpose.

Welcome again.

There is also a little adjustment available on the service flap latch. If plunger moves ok, try adjusting?
Good to hear you're pleased with it, and a warm welcome to a new owner.

yes mate gotta agree .. having been out of the uk for 11 years and now returning i wanted something cheap to run .. and reliable . and searching ebay etc on one popped up ... i had never considered an A2 ... but now my daily trip to work and back is 60 miles i aint complaining . but next on the list will be an All road for the days off and the A2 for work commute

Welcome aboard Pete :) These are cars that you love, they get under your skin. One of the biggest surprises about A2 ownership was this forum, I had no idea that the car came with such a passionate community behind it. It's a way of life now ? Enjoy your A2 and hope to meet you at a social at some point, now it's looking more likely that there will actually be some this year!

Thanks for the welcome, the service flap cable has stretched so although it can move freely it cannot pull open the catch. Sadly I tried too hard to open it and broke the end of the fixed tang, I hang my head in shame.

Welcome. I have family living near you in an old 16th century Inn, you may know them?

I have a spare smooth type service hatch if required?

Ian

That sounds like a plan, I have committed to a provisional offer by Steve who is expecting a couple of donor cars. I would like to see your offer though, let me know where and when, I am retired so available anytime.

The trick if it's sticking is to get a flat screwdriver blade just to the right of the lug (as you look at it), and push gently to the left while pulling on the flap. Not sure if there would be the angle to get in there and push the catch on the end of the cable away from the lug. I'm sure someone must have a spare they can sort you out with. EDIT ... I see those plans are already underway ?

I will decline if Steve is helping you as I don't want to take anything away from him. He is our go to man for parts, so build that relationship, he is a great guy.

@Motoman please take up @Kleynie 's offer if you wish. I get enough business to keep me ticking over and the purpose of the club is keeping the cars on the road, not making a profit (there's ebay for that...I shudder at the thought and hope I never have to move m,y services to that platform :) )

Hi Kleinie, yes please to the service hatch. Just tell me the cost and postage and I will pay you right away. I know they are not cheap so let me pay the going rate as I am grateful for all the help and kindness from AO2C members.

Hello Motoman and welcome to the forum!

From a fellow Shropshire A2 owner
Hi Hydo, thanks for the welcome. I am very new to owning my A2, I have known it for several years as it belonged to a friend of mine. I am very pleased with it and any slight problems are being sorted thanks to the amazing guys here who are helping me. I am in the process of trying to bring it back to showroom condition, it will take a long time as I enjoy driving it and being amazed how a little 1.4 a 3 cylinder diesel goes up Shropshire hills. When the weather and Covid improves it would be great to meet you and learn more about this little gem.

Yes, I also have been impressed with the little diesel 3pot. Mine has had many a trip over the Burway. With it being a light car it does a lot with 74 bhp!

Happy to help with scanning your car for fault codes and knowledge sharing
