:confused:Hi all,

Just thought i would post the question

"How well does your A2 handbrake work and is it in your opinion any worse than other cars"

My a2 just seems to never hold on a hill and is hard to adjust the cabling to work properly.

If i adjust the cable to the point the handbrake holds on my drive the rear wheels seem to bind so i have to back it off again but then it does not hold!! cant seem to win!!.
Before spending money replacing cables and shoes (mine is a 2002 tdi) please post your opinions or advice re this problem.

Thanks

Simon

i'll second that

my rear brakes are pretty carp, even though the hand brake is good and tight

never occured to me that it may be an A2 quirk, i thought someone had tightened the cable and not adjusted the rear calipers properly

cant speak for drums as i dont have them

information on adjustment of shoes

In light of the responses to my thread has anyone got a .pdf on adjusting the rear shoes/handbrake on the a2, i was under the impression they were self adjusting (i have shoes on my model 1.4tdi 2002), thanks,

simon

The handbrake on mine was rubbish until I had the rear brake shoes replaced. One on each side had broken in half. Cable needed adjusting too, and the whole lot was just over £120.

This thread reminds me to ask someone to have a look at my handbrake. When I had a puncture on a rear tyre recently and lifted one side on the jack, the car rolled away even though it was on a gentle slope and I only just caught it before it would have disappeared down a deep slope! Only this incident told me that the handbrake on other side of the car is not working / firm enough.

Simple solution in the meantime is to put the car in gear whenever parking on a slope.

problem sorted

I have now sorted out the handbrake problem that could be starting to affect us a2 owners with the older drum type brakes to the rear as they get past the 8 year mark, here is a link to my post, it turned out to be seized brake shoes where the shoe links to the handbrake cable.

Total Cost of drum brakes refurb was £41.50 including, hamerite spray paint to refurb drum, brake shoes, 2x brake cylinders and a small bottle of brake fluid i am quite impressed with myself and am sure i have saved a small fortune from what it would have cost at audi !!!!!
