How can I secure my battery ? Missing parts.

The battery in my Tdi 90 is unsecured.
When I got the car a few weeks ago I found a large plastic plate in the boot area and two short bolts . Understand it is a battery cover.
I understand that the plate fits somewhere in the battery area but I can't work out how.
But I need to secure the battery somehow.
And get hold of the missing parts?
Can you please advise ?

Cheers

It sounds like you've got all the bits, they're just not screwed in. The plastic plate isn't a cover for the battery, it's the rear wall around it. There are two bolt holes in the tray on the boot floor. The bottom of the plate acts as a clamp for the base of the battery. There's a picture where you can get the idea in the first post in this thread. It's possible your battery base is too large for the clamp hence why it wasn't refitted.

The holes in the toolbox well that Ian mentioned which receive the bolts of the battery retainer should contain some brass inserts that the bolts screw into. These might be missing or stripped in which case put an ad in Wanted. These might be turning due to previous over tightening, in which case remove them, carefully add suitable glue to the outside ( I used Araldite), refit and wait to set.

Are there two captive threads also in the upper edge of the battery compartment behind the battery? If so, your car may have previously had the spare wheel bracket, fitting of which necessitates removal of the normal plastic battery retainer wall, with four screws securing the bracket, two above / behind the battery, and two at its base at the rear. Subsequent to this, if the spare wheel kit was removed you need to refit the plastic piece, but this may not have been done. As suggested above though it is also possible that the battery is the wrong form so it has not been possible to refit the compartment wall again and it has just been left.

No, it goes on the hatch side. If you have foam tool holders in the boot, take them out, then you'll see the holes.

So the plate fits behind the battery ie the rear seat side ?

The battery clamp fits to the rear of the battery, against the cellular foam that holds some of the tools. It would be very helpful if you post a picture of your battery as it is now.

The battery clamp is the "wall" below the battery. You can see the two retaining bolts shining below it.

Thanks for all your help.
At last I can see where it fits but the new battery seems to be too wide for the clamp to fit other than saw off the bulge which holds the lip of the battery down.
Think this is my only option and jam the battery in .
Grateful your advice.

What battery have you got? I've already suggested you post a photo of your battery compartment as it is now.

Thanks Steve.
The battery is obviously too wide so I have trimmed the bracket to fit.
Many thanks

Is it important to fir the small pipe onto the battery as the new battery seems to have a plug in it.

Yes, that pipe vents any potentially explosive gases out of the car. The plug just pulls out. The plug at the other end of the battery must be left in situ.

I'm curious to know what model battery you have.
