Even some 1.4 petrol engines from the A2 are different to other 1.4 engines in the A2, you need to check the three character code for your engine (maybe AUA?)
This will be on the inside of your service book.
If that matches the three character code on the Polo engine then you have a match (apart from some of the external parts which can be swapped from your engine to the other

As Steve indicated, the first step is to check the engine code is the same. After that, the only safe way to do the job is have the old and new engines stood side by side and swap over all the parts that differ. This could be anything from the intake and exhaust manifolds to the backplate for attaching the gearbox.

Yes 1.4 should be fine. The later CGGB fits as direct replacement for 1.4 AUA petrol but has newer emissions standards (Euro 5).
