1.4TDi Engine cut out and no fault found!!!

Hi All

I hope someone can offer some advice on this.

My A2 has developed a problem whereby the engine will cut out when driving.

The fault occurs at lower revs, usually when the car is slowing to idle. There are no fault warnings on the dash apart from the battery light coming on when the engine cuts out.

To restart, I have to turn the car over in gear to rock it into life and on several occasions, a rasping sound comes from the starter motor.

I have taken the car into a garage who hooked it up to a computer and it does not report any faults.

They have stripped the fuel lines down and found nothing there either.

Our final resort is to take in to the Audi main dealer for inspection.

Has anyone got any experience of this problem? The car is a 51 reg.

Hi Le Chat
I've not heard of this problem before but it does sound as though it could be fuel related.
Does the car start ok after standing overnight ? If not, it may an air leak, possibly on the fuel filter.
Using the starter motor with the car in gear is not recommended. The rasping sound is probably the starter pinion being sill engaged when the engine fires up.
Even though the garage did not find any fault codes it would be good to have a second opinion from someone with VagCom. Skipton01 is probably not too far away from you and if he has time, I'm sure he would help

Cheers Spike

I dont know if ill be any help here, or you might even have it sorted by now?

My 1.4TDi Arosa (so same engine) cut out on me, sounds like what yours is doing. Do you get a deeeeeeeep when it cuts out?

When trying to restart, do you notice if the glow plug light comes on?

On mine it didnt, it was just chugging over as if fuel was not getting through. After a while it did start though.

I spoke to a VW specialist who said its probably (i thin he said) the ECU relay. Its located behind the fusepanel inside the car. I replaced mine and its been fine ever since.

Also Vagcom did not bring up a fault with mine either.

Hope thats some help!

Just an update here.

We had the car repaired at the local Audi dealer, they told us that there was a fault with the cam speed sensor and that this was the reason for our problems.

We had it repaired at a cost of £250.00 and initially the car seemed OK. We have just returned from holiday to find that the car has developed the same fault again only worse.

I have spoken with the dealer who told me that we need to get the car back to them to go back on the diagnosis machine and that they will test to see if the replaced part has failed. If this is the case, they will replace it FOC. If it is not the problem and thay repair another component then I will have to pay for the repair.

I have a huge problem here, why should I have to pay again for another repair if the original diagnosis and repair was wrong? If you pay for a filling at the dentist and it falls out you dont expect to have to pay for them to repair it.

Anyone got any thoughts where I stand on this with Audi?

The car is out of warranty by the way.

Thanks!!!
