1.6 FSI - What if it wasn't run on 98RON

… which is nothing to do with what was written in a press release or the handbook twenty years ago.

The idea that E5 95 RON is/was going to kill the engine is a bit of a nonsense - the most common FSI-specific engine problem is likely the operation of the manifold flaps, and I’m pretty certain octane rating isn’t a factor there…
You're probably right.
I don't think it is the actual FSI engine that is incompatible with the alcohol. There's nothing, (that I'm aware of), unusual about the construction and materials used in the FSI, when compared to similar, non FSI engines. For example, fuel hoses, seals, etc.
My belief is that it's the specialised nature of the FSI's exhaust system that is the problem, (and not just the A2 version).
The CO cat, immediately after the exhaust manifold, (no down pipe as such), and the NOx cat and NOx sensor are my prime suspects. Petrol blended with 10% alcohol burns hotter than non alcohol blends, and is hygroscopic, increasing the likelihood of moisture and condensation in the NOx cat, and consequent damage.
Just my opinion though, I don't think we'll ever know for sure.
Personally, I'll stick with Shell V-Power. No point in having an FSI that doesn't go like an FSI should.
Mac.
