2001 amf fuel filter location

Yes for your early AMF replace the whole metal canister like this:

I know Dave @Dave M knows the earlier TDI engines require this type of filter, he was just having a moment so please forgive him. He will be kicking himself for getting confused.

The filter element that is replaced is for the later generation and looks like this, which is not the type for your early AMF:

Be very careful when you remove the valve ( T piece ) on the canister. If it gets damaged you are unlikely to find a replacement for it that is applicable to the A2. Interestingly this valve is built into the later plastic filter housing.

Remember to clamp off the fuel lines before disconnecting and ideally swap over one line at a time to ensure they get refitted onto the correct ports.

I have never clamped the lines on mine just removed the speed fastening hoses and removed the filter complete with fuel lines.
Essential to prime the new filter I would say and do.
Both mine have both started and ran fine afterwards without any cause for concern but I am aware how horrid a situation an air locked diesel is!

I have recently changed the canister type filter on my 2001 tdi. Drivers side just ahead of the rear wheel. I didn't use line clamps and numbered the lines before removal.
I lost a tiny amount of fuel in the change over and filled the new canister with fuel before refitting.
No issues.
