ABS Control Unit - should I replace?

I've had ABS warning lights on in my A2 for some time now so took it to my local independent garage who told me the control unit needs replacing. The part alone costs £1200.

My question is, do I have to have this replaced? Is it safe to drive without replacing? I don't really want to spend this kind of money on the A2 as I think I would be better off just buying a new car.

Any suggestions?
