abs fault got me stumped

hi all, drove my daughters a2 home and as driving the abs light and the warning triangle came on and started beeping, I tried turning it off and back on again but the problem still exists, I scanned it with my cheap e-bay scanner which works on my mk5 golf and 08 plate audi a3 it works on the A2 but shows a linking error on the abs side, so thinking it was the scanner I went to the local garage who do diagnostics and had them plug the A2 in to there bosch (black and green machine) It wouldn't connect so they tried another system which showed no abs ecu detected but no codes as it couldn't connect to the abs ecu now has anyone any ideas what the problem could be and a solution cheers in advance adrian

Hi Adrian,

Well you've started off the right way, in knowing you'll need to scan the controller for fault codes.

Not much can be done without the codes, so I'd suggest finding someone with a genuine VCDS to help you out or a trip to your local VAG dealership for them to do the same.

Cheers

Well I'd question that too if any of the scanners were specifically designed to troubleshoot the VAG range of vehicles, but from your original post that doesn't appear to be the case.

If all of the scanners failed to identify any control modules, then I'd suspect they are using an incompatable protocol.

all 3 machines hooked up to the car and could read engine fault codes and airbag codes but would not connect to the abs side

I think it is unlikely for the ABS controller to have failed to the point where the unit can't be detected, however not impossible.

If there hasn't been any prior warnings, the ABS wiring to the pump is undisturbed and the car has been maintained by a competent tech, then i'd suspect the tools being used to fault-find are not compatable.

There a quite a few of the membership who have genuine VCDS hardware, so you may find someone local who can assist.
Failing that, if you want a free scan and inspection of your A2, and happy to travel northbound about 1hr, I can recommend Tony at A2 Cars (Hotstuff on here). He looks after many members cars and always happy to help.

thanks again jeff I will book the car in to the independent specialist near me in the next few days and keep the post updated thanks for all your help

That exact fault that you have been describing proved to be a faulty steering position sensor on my car .... It had started-out as an intermittent fault, The problem was shown with a VCDS scan ....

David

I had the exact same flashing on the dashboard after misaligning the steering position sensor 360 degrees when I installed my cruise control. DJ 190 might be right.

I doubt this is the cause of the OP's issue unless the steering wheel has been removed.
Both of the above occured after work on the vehicle that required removal of the steering wheel.

hi just to update this, I sent the abs control module to ac tronics and had it tested it is working canbus is running and communicating so they returned it back to me, I installed it back into the car this morning still the same (which I expected as no fault found) so I drove it my independent vw/audi specialist and he scanned it with vagcom it still would not connect to the abs controller when he went in to the main ecu he said it is found and communicating he did all this for free he asked me to book it in at a later date so he can scope the canbus signal as they can get confused sometimes he was also talking about the dash pod ( I trust the garage as they look after my a3,mk5 golf, and now this, but could anyone else throw some light on this problem cheers Ade
