ABS Rotor Issue

Would like to get some opinions from the forum (Mike esp welcome!) over the following issue.

My ABS/Traction control warning lights came on just before Christmas (after rolling 50 yards) and so I booked it in thinking could just be a tach. Diagnostics showed Front NS us & Tach changed to no avail. The continuity was checked & OK. The outcome was there seemed to be a problem with the Rotor on the Wheel Bearing assembly and so the assembly was changed and Success! BUT it was only about 4 months ago I had both Front Bearings done (all was OK at this time & by a different garage).

They have given me the part to take back so I will follow this up, but has anybody had a rotor fail? I can't see how fitting of the housing would cause a problem so is there a manufacturing fault?

The cost of the Bearing Housings are not cheap so if I can get any input before I go armed with the dodgy part it might be useful.

Hi Roy
I think the ABS pick-up ring is incorporated in the wheel bearing oil seal and would be difficult to damage during assembly. Quality could be an issue, particularly if it was a pattern part rather than a genuine Audi bearing assy

Cheers Spike

Spike is quite correct - I can only think that the bearing used in replacement was an aftermarket one and/or the speed rotor was damaged during installation (maybe was loosened from the main assembly, such that it didn't turn at the same rate as the bearing itself).

As you say, housings are not cheap (neither are genuine bearings at £85 each), so you should expect some explanation as well as a refund on the parts, as they have not lasted any time at all.

Cheers,

Mike

PS Now that the bearing has been removed, you do know that it has been detroyed don;t you?

Thought I would follow this up for anybody else if they ever get this prob.

After a week of what I thought was a cure the problem returned again with the same wheel!!

I took it back and after a lot of rechecking they found the bearing casing was worn and out of spec and the bearing assembly was moving slightly and mis-aligning the rotor to the tach. The bearings are an interference fit and don't have circlips fitted.

I had to cough up for the casing but they supplied & a new bearing & Labour FOC.

Anybody had this happen?

Regards

Roy
