ABS, Traction light and (!) after having front wheels up in the air (turning).

Time to get angry? I'd probably be going back to that specialist and demanding it fixed at this point. Wouldn't pay them another penny either since they've told you 2-3 times now that then could 'fix' it.

Whether or not you'd have any luck I don't know. This approach generally works wonders at the main dealer, so that's one advantage of going there!

Yes, I'm getting a little cross, definitely. You could argue they've mis-diagnised twice at my expence. However, it definitely didn't play up like this during the first 50 miles after coming out the garage. But now its every time just like before.

I wonder if the bearing could have worked itself loose again?

Yes is the answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I looked today. There is a 2cm gap between the disc and the heat shield on the o/s!! Only about 5mm between the disc and heatshield on the n/s.

I thought at first the heatshield was bent but its uniform all the way around.

Yikes - the wheel could have come off!!!

More detail when I strip it down. I will be doing the work this time - no more garages for me!

Does anyone know where I can get an offside front hub for an A2? I'm going to get a brand new bearing put into a replacement hub and fit the whole assembly myself.

Hi James,

The hub and the bearing are a single, integrated part for the A2. I'd recommend buying a new one.
I believe the Audi units cost about £120, but they're made by third parties... Bosch in this case. Whilst I'm generally one for buying genuine parts, it's possible to buy the Bosch unit without the Audi packaging for about £70.
If you're going to do the job yourself, you'll need a special tool to remove and refit into the knuckle.
The nut that holds the shaft that goes through the bearing is single use, meaning you'll need a replacement. They're cheap as chips from Audi.

Cheers,

Tom

Cheers Tom. However, I apologise. I don't think I explained myself correctly.

My problem is that the hub/bearing unit is coming out of the cast iron hub carrier.

Hi James,
If you want to do the job yourself, you can hire the correct removal and installation tool from a company who advertise on ebay. They are Phoenix motorsport and the cost is £53 for 7 days hire. You give them a deposit of about £200 and they post it to you, and provided they get it back in the time stated, they refund the difference. Phone 01276 409325. I would not try to install a bearing in the hub carrier without the proper tools.
I found this out last week when I was looking. Not tried them yet myself.
Cheers, Geoff

Right, many thanks for all your help and advice.

I've bought two new FAG (OE) bearings from GSF car parts and I'm going to hire the bearing removal/fitting kit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321123362500?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 from Phoenix motorsport (thanks Mrmosky!) to do both the fronts.

I stripped most of the front hubs apart last weekend and I bought a 36mm bi-hex socket (for the driveshaft nuts) along with a 5-stud hub puller yesterday.

I also found this rather excellent video (official SKF video) on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtU4koy-iUc

I'll let you know how I get on.

James
