Advice needed re 'Gearbox mount bush'

Hello, I have recently acquired an A2 and have been very impressed so far. I had a cambelt/ tensioner/ waterpump/ v belt earlier this week which cost just under £500- far more than I would have liked but a job I appreciate is fairly vital to get done correctly! When doing these jobs the Audi garage have noted that my 'rear gearbox mount bush' has 'perished'. And they have quoted me £198 for it to be sorted- I simply didn't have the money to pay for this so I have two questions- firstly how urgent is this to have done (I wasn't told anything other than get done asap by Audi), Was Audi's quote fair or overpriced? And also can this have ill effect on any other aspect of my car I should be aware of? I will have the money after Christmas to get this job done I would imagine and wanted to know if safe to keep iot running as normal (I don't do many miles at all really).. Many thanks in advance for your help :)

Hello and welcome to the club!

It sounds like the dealership is trying to empty your wallet still further - they've already overcharged by around £100 for the cambelt/waterpump!

The cost of the entire mount (the bush is not available separately) is around £70 and fitting should be no more than around £40-50.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks for that :) Do you know if they say that then its fairly urgent- must admit it all feels and sounds very smooth to me! Cheers,

It's not an urgent job by any means - the bottom support is there merely to control fore/aft movement as the engine revs.

I can't see a worn bush being problematic and if everything feels smooth, then I'd leave it until you can afford it, or even better, can find an independant who will do it for you cheaper than the dealership.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks Mike, wasn't really wanting to fork out for it before Christmas at least so thats a weight off my mind- cheers for the advice, Graham

It depends on the exact terminology the garage used but in addition to the pendulum support Mike described there is a gearbox mount which is part of the engine mounting system. Again, the mount is an assembly incorporating vibration isolators which are not available seperately. I'd guess the price is closer to £100 with similar fitting charges to the pendulum support.
Its unusual for either of these mounts to perish but they can soften due to long term contamination with oil. Could be worth checking for oil leaks

Thanks for your answer, funnily enough they said there was an oil leak of some kind but were going to charge £58 just to investigate it- the previous owner warned that before she had had it checked over an oil leak several times by Audi and nothing had ever been resolved so I was somewhat sceptical apart from anything, I replace oil as frequently as I would expect to, no more than usual- is it easy enough to check for the oil leak to see if it may be affecting the mount myself? Sorry to appear clueless but Im not that knowledgable about cars!

It does not need a big oil leak to cause the problem as just an egg-cup full goes a long way. This level of oil loss may not show up on the dipstick. Its also possible you have a gearbox or power steering oil leak so have these levels checked to be on the safe side.

Cheers Spike
