Advice please, my alarm is being triggered and flattens the battery

Over several months now, my A2 has had the alarm sensors trigger the alarm, and the consequence is a flat battery. Well at least that's what I'm guessing.

Last happened five weeks ago, and again last night. Last night's was worse, since the battery was so flat that even connecting a fully charged battery via the OBD2 port couldn't provide enough power to operate the central locking, and I had to go through the difficult rigmarole of getting to the emergency cable inside the rear tailgate.

The battery I removed today was only able to provide 3v, as tested on my multimeter.

I've done a VCDS scan, and the low voltage had triggered a lot of codes that I've not seen before, but the critical codes seem to be
45 Inter Monitor
01463 - alarm triggered by Sensor for Anti-Theft system - 45-00 closed

and
46 Central Convenience
01370 Alarm triggered by Interior Monitoring - 35-00
01368 Alarm triggered by Luggage Compartment Switch - 35-00
01371 Alarm triggered by Door Contact Switch; Driver's Side - 35-00

My car normally sits parked on the public highway, and I don't know whether or not the car is being interfered with.

Can I get my local garage to fix the problem, or am I better off waiting until Tom ( @timmus ) gets back from holiday and then driving up to Lancaster?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Hello Steve,

After reading through similar threads from over the years it seems like the likely culprit is a failing CCCU.

Some other possibilities are a weak vehicle battery or a failed battery within the alarm module below the fuel flap mechanism. Previous advice also points to a possible issue with the service flap ‘closed’ circuit but as you have random alarm triggers events registered on your scan I’d go with the CCCU.

What revision CCCU do you have and are you confident twith VCDS to pair your remote fobs to a replacement CCCU.

Kind regards,

Tom

Good evening Tom,

Thanks for the quick response.

I actually had my Q CCCU replaced via Timmus after this started. I'd be disappointed if the AF CCCU he supplied proves to have the exact same fault (the old one definitely needed replacing). I doubt that it will be necessary, but I'd have no problems matching my fobs to a new CCCU if I had to.

I have two Varta batteries which I am alternating. Silver E44, one is 4 years old, the other purchased 6 weeks ago. I've no reason to doubt the quality of either.

A failed battery within the alarm module may well be the cause - the alarm has never sounded in the 6 years I've owned the car, and VCDS tells me that the alarm horn has "No Communications - intermittent".

Hello again Steve,

If you had provided a scan report or mentioned this known issue then I would have narrowed it down to the alarm module immediately. I guess that you need a replacement module. The part number is 8Z0951285 but understand that 8L0951605A also works just fine but cannot confirm, which I can see is about £40-50 delivered on eBay right now.

I have a known good factory A2 8Z0 module to here help out if you're interested. Due to work activity right now it may not be until the weekend that I can send it to you which would be £20 plus minimal p&p, how does £25 all in to your door sound. Happy to have a chat over PM if you're able to wait that long.

Kind regards,

Tom

Tom, although I said that my alarm has never sounded, I realise on reflection that I was mistaken in thinking that. The alarm may never have gone off in situations where an alarm would be expected to go off, but it does sound whenever I swap the battery over, as it did yesterday. So, it's unlikely to be the module or its battery at fault. But thanks anyway for the kind offer.

I've attached my full scan from yesterday. I suspect that the majority of those faults were triggered by the very low battery voltage, but please have a look through it and let me know if you spot anything.

Here's the scan I did back in early April, when the problem first appeared.
I'd still suspect the alarm horn. If you have no comms to it, then it is faulty.
The battery leaks, and corrosion can even migrate into the loom.
I'd try a sounder swap, to confirm, or rule it out. If the replacement sounder is good, it will start to charge once fitted. The no comms should change to low voltage, as comms is restored, and finally clearing, once the alarm horn battery is fully charged.
Mac.

I'm inclined at this point to take Tom up on his offer. I know that I can get it fitted before the end of the month.

Have you got any of the older software updates still as I’ve had a number of historic faults appear on our VW Tig dating back to 2017 when I first bought the car, & I don’t recall seeing any of them on my VCDS full version until I had a flat battery these then appeared & have been cleared on the subsequent scans using 21.? Version.
Just a thought
Keith.

I used VCDS 22.3 for these scans, just downloaded the very latest update.

No I saw that, what I was trying to get at was is it scannable using the older version say 19/20
Showing these faults if you were to scan with an older version.

When you say the alarm is going off, do mean the alarm is sounding AND the hazards are flashing? That would be my interpretation anyway.
If ONLY the alarm siren is sounding then unplugging it (access via DS taillight hatch) is the easiest thing to do in the short term. Having said that, I doubt a faulty alarm siren would also drain the car's battery but it is possible.
If the hazards are going off but NO alarm sounding then this would potentially be the same problem I recently had, which turned out to be the hazard relay (not hazard switch) behind the storage cubby in the center console.
If the interior monitoring code is being thrown up you can adjust the sensitivity of the sensor via VCDS and see if that helps.
Likewise you can carry out output tests on the CCCU to rule out potential triggers like bonnet, fuel flap, etc, via Channel 5 of the CCCU.
Apologies if any of this is stating the obvous. :)

Don't think so, when they're gone, they're gone.

Right, I'm with you now. I've got most earlier downloads saved, so I can easily go back to version 19 if necessary.

The alarm isn't going off, but I don't have easy sight of the car where I live. The only reason that I think it's the alarm flattening the battery is because that shows up on my scan results each time after the battery goes flat.

I'll have a look at adjusting the sensitivity of the internal sensor, thanks.

It can be a bit of a rabbit hole this one, Steve. I spent a lot of time diagnosing a similar problem. Fortunately my car is visible so it never got to the point where the hazards actually caused the battery to flatten.
I suspect the fault codes you are getting are unrelated to the actual fault and are simply a consequence of the low voltage due to the fault.
To rule out the hazard relay you could disconnect it using the A2OC approved "make a fist" method when you are done using the car for the day. In the morning, if the battery hasn't gone flat you know the relay is the culprit. Additionally, there shouldn't be any fault codes. Diagnosis... villainous relay causing hazards to flatten battery and giving spurious fault codes and plenty of misdirection.
DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR WITH THE RELAY DISCONNECTED. The indicators run through this relay as well and, consequently, will be disabled.
If I'm right one of the usual suspects will have a replacement relay for you.
If I'm wrong... well, it's cost you nothing to rule this out.
Good luck, Steve. :)

Evening Steph,

If you also want to try a known good hazard relay then I can also supply one along with the alarm module.

Just let me know and I’ll box up either or. It’s for you Sir.

Kind regards,

Tom

One of the afore mentioned usual suspects. Well done, Tom. :)
