aftermarket leather seats/trim

Yes, I think you're right Spike. They mention it on that site but no details. Followed the link to the Audi homepage but nothing there either.
I'll keep searching.

Toby, don't be deterred by the seat airbags - when they trigger (and they don't always, especially in a rear or head-on shunt) they don't make a mess of the leather seats.

The airbag unit is a self-contained item, which can be easily replaced (you can even transfer yours over, albeit with a special tool) and re-coded to the car.

If you find a decent set in a breakers, go for it - it'll be your cheapest option.

Cheers,
Mike

cool

OK, Cheers Mike and Spike.

I was more concerned of them going off during replacement, but if I can use mine if a set comes up with them deployed then at least it's not the end of the world.

So the seat airbag could be swapped over, in the unlikely event a breaker's yard comes up trumps? Good to know, I'm not put off so much now.

Thanks chaps.

Bear in mind Toby that you do need a special tool, which plugs into the seats wiring during any transfer. Audi dealers (or VAG Parts) will be able to order it for you.

Mail me off list when you are ready for details.

Cheers,
Mike

Toby, if you find some seats and need to buy the special adaptor harness which makes the airbag safe to work on, please be aware of the following -
I recently tried to buy an Audi service tool from my dealer and was told they could no longer sell directly to the public. They gave me a copy of a memo from Audi which outlined the new procedure - basically you call Audi Service, tell them what you want to do and they decide if you'r capable of doing the job without killing anyone. If you pass the test, they provide the tool part number and arrange the sale - not sure if this is direct or via the dealer.
Never thought of VagParts - I may give them a try.

Cheers Spike

"Airbag adapter - VAS 5094"

Ask VAG Parts for that and see what they say. Basically, you can't do the job without it, so if you can't get hold of one, then you're scuppered.

If you jave no joy, let me know and I can possibly get one from my friendly parts specialist, who knows my skill levels are up to it.

Cheers,

Mike

Ok fellas. Good to know (again!). I have some Audi contacts through work so if I source some interior I'll check with my man here as he's an ex-Audi service manager.
But thanks for the offer Mike. I have access to the Audi master price file so I'll check the cost of the tool.
