Although todays budget was an absolute shambles, one glimmer of benefit was announced:

It seems that in 2009, the road tax for any car emitting less than 130g Co2/km will be £0! This applies to both new and existing cars.

However, they'll probably have introduced a road pricing scheme to fleece us all another way by then, as well as keeping an eye on where we go and when we go there - big brother here we come!

...caution - the BBC News website has the following which seems to imply NEW cars from 2010 will be exempt.....remember years ago when the government said cars 25years old won't pay car tax..and then it changed to cars registered before 1974...

Take a look at the table on page 122. Basically, if you pay £0 at the moment, you'll continue to pay £0. If you currently pay £35, you'll pay £30 next year, then £35 thereafter.

I agree it's crazy. Government love to have complex rules and then they wonder why government is so inefficient.

This probably partly explains why DVLA sent me such a negative reply when I asked for an up-to-date stats on A2s in the UK. 2 years ago I got it for free. Now they want £600 because they said it would take 6 man days to do. When I sent them the code, having taken me a rusty database programmer, just 30 minutes to write and test, they replied that their systems were old and too complex to do the simple things using modern tools!! They are probably working days and nights to get this latest budget changes made and tested by April 2009.
 
How much do I need to pay for my 1.6 - I've still to have her taxed in a week! No idea how much yet... is there anywhere online to find out?

The £0 for 111-120g CO2/km is only the 'showroom tax', that is payably on new cars in that year.

As I said before, all 1.2 TDis will remain at £0. For all other A2s, what you pay at the moment will remain the same, apart from a £5 increase to £120 next year for all pre-March 2001 registered cars and then a one off drop to £30 from £35, which then returns to £35 the year after.
