Having just rebuilt my engine following cambelt failure it could also be one of the hydraulic tappets that would receive the force of impact as it looks like the inside section where the valve makes contact.
The valve cap is a very substantial component,
Another place worth checking is the spring retaining tube for want of a better word as one part looks like 1 of the 2 lugs that keep the injector spring in place, I will dig out my broken one to photograph tomorrow.

Thanks for posting the pic & it does look like that, yes. Would it mean my engine has had cambelt failure then? The guy was still running it & when I picked it up was still running albeit it roughly. Attached the pic below.
