Audi Service History

Hi guys,

I'm new to posting on this fantastic forum, but I've been lurking as a guest for the past few months since I decided I really wanted to be the proud owner of an A2.

Anyway, if you guys could help with my question (I have used the search function on this) I would much appreciate it:

After a lot of looking around I thought I had found the A2 for me (colour, spec etc..), however after contacting the dealer about it, he informed me there was unfortunately no service history with it, but it did have a full MOT history. This A2 is a 2001 TDi SE with around 70'000 miles on it, just MOT'ed and serviced, no mechanical or electrical problems whatsoever according to the dealers....

So my question is..how would you guys proceed in this situation:

Is having the previous service history really important in terms of me/dealer valuation opinion, and also future valuation for private or trade in purposes. If I proceed with the purchase (I will have to base my decision on the much valued advice you guys give) I intend to keep a full audi service record from this point on.

Again, sorry for being ignorant, I guess I should know the answers to my questions, but I could really do with some help...since becoming "aware" of the A2, I have become hypnotised by it's charms!

Best Wishes people,

Sean.

In this case, a full history would have been very useful, if only for one BIG reason:

has the cambelt change been done yet?

TDi's should have their belts done at anywhere between 40k miles and 80k miles, so really, you should have a new cambelt (and water pump) there.

I'd use this as a bargaining point with the dealer - either do the work, prove it's been done or knock off £400 for needing to have it done.

As regards maintaining a full Audi history yourself, it's not really necessary, you can have the work done by good independants, who will provide history but cost up to half the price.

Best of luck with the intended purchase.

Cheers,

Mike

My understanding is that, if the car has been serviced by an Audi dealer, any Audi dealer can access a record of this from the car's licence registration number or its VIN.

Thanks Mike,

I really appreciate the advice.

The missing service history..Its' been tormenting me a bit, it has been the one thing holding me off on going ahead with this. I will do as you suggest. Thanks.

Thanks AlanM,

Sean.

Hi Sean
When a car is coming up to 7 years old I think general condition is more important than a full service history. If it looks like it has been well cared for then your 80% there. Another good sign is if it has not had too many previous owners.
If the Audi dealer search does not reveal anything, ask for a look at the log book and make a note of the previous owners details. Most would be more than happy to provide a bit of history about their old car, particularly if you can contact them by phone.
Finally, if you live reasonably close to any of our club members perhaps they could give you a second opinion on the car

Cheers Spike
