Bose Lifestyle System

On a bit of a whim, we bought a new TV and sound system over the weekend. The system in question is a Bose Lifestyle 28.

Quite expensive but the clarity of music is just superb. You hear things that you never heard before. When watching DVD's, it seems to bring a whole new atmosphere to the film. We had a Yamaha full 5.1 system anyway but the Bose is in a different league. It is also just one unit, whereas before we had separate DVD, amp, tuner etc. Now I only have about 5 cables instead of 55.

Now we're just waiting for the TV to be delivered, then we can really annoy the neighbours.[^]

I've heard iffy things about the Bose system in the A2 but I can say, the home systems sound goooood!!

Rob,

I bought myself a Bose Acoustimass 10 series III (or MK III) lately. I listened to several surround speaker packages, and in the shops the Bose were great (the best?).
But, at home, it didn't work properly. First I thought I hadn't positioned the cubes right or the acoustimass module, because the sound wasn't satisfying at all. Then I tried all the possible settings on the module, the receiver and the DVD-player (both Onkyo). Still no good.
I decided to go back to the shop where I bought the speakers, but just before that, I met the Bose account manager.
He told me that the European AM-sets needed a modification, because the output-signal on some European amplifiers/receivers to turn on the module were too small/low. The module-input had to be modified (set lower) to work in the right way. It would only take three days, he told me, one day to send it in, one day for the modification and one day to send it back to me.

Well, it took about a fortnight before I got it back. The sound is much better now. But, after all, I think I'll buy a 'grown-up' speaker system next time. Especially at low volumes there's a lack in the midrange, and I had to change the trebble settings on my receiver too. On higher volumes it's surprisingly well.....
Maybe it's just a matter of getting used to, as I read on the internet. If I cannot, I'll just sell them again.

Listened to the Bose systems many many times, including their classic demo with the huge speakers that are just covers over the cubes (they need to change their marketing man). Must admit on first impressions their really do impress, and as Rob said, the packaging is one advantage they have over the alternatives, hence 'lifestyle'.
However unfortunately for Bose, in my case I always tend to take a demo at a show where they just cant quite compete!!
Rob : What TV are you getting? Dont tell me a plasma - I'll be jealous!!!

No, not a plasma - they still haven't come down enough in price.

Ours will be a 32" JVC flatscreen, widescreen, 100Hz jobby. Can't remember the exact model number. We chose this one mainly due to it's looks. The other ones we considered were a 32" Loewe. Glad we didn't get this as I've now heard some dodgy things about them. Also the Toshiba 'picture frame' TV's. They have the screen and hardly any other surround so a 32" is roughly the same physical size as a 28" and a 36" the same size as a 32".

All the old system has now been sold, including the old tv. We are resisting getting the portable down from the bedroom and are going to see if we can have a weekend without watching telly. Could be interesting!!

I tried to get used to the typical Bose-sound. Didn't succeed.
Put them on the internet and sold them only a little cheaper than I bought them. Have to find some new speakers now....

I thought most A2 drivers would appreceate a real good sound the Bose stuff is OK for the car but most of you who are British have to look at some audi sites once here are some links

Jeff,

I dont understand your post. Many A2 owners have very good appreciation for hi-fi!!! (Linn, Castle, Micromega, Kimbar Kable, etc, etc)

I have to agree with Mauro... I would have thought that B&O equipment would have been popular with A2 owners:

Wonderful styling, copious amounts of aluminium - a triumph of form and technology over rational inspection of the price list ;)

I haven't spent any considerable money on my system for 10 years, funnily enough the last time I was single [:0]

My system

Meridian 200 CD transport, 203 DAC with Illuminations D-60 interconnect
Musical Fidelity F22 pre-amp and F15 Power Amp (valves in both)
Acoustic Energy AE1 speakers
Silver Audio interconnects (http://www.silveraudio.com/appass.htm)
Nordost Solar Wind Speaker Cable
Kimber Reference Powerkords throughout
REL Q-100E subwoofer.

I still like it, the interconnects blew me away, but being solid silver I would expect it to.
