can someone help identify this noise on startup?

"They all do that, sir" :)

The starter pinion is being slow to retract, a common fault. At least it hasn't got as far as making the bearings scream yet. It just needs some fresh grease in the right places inside the starter motor. There's a guide on how to do it somehwere.

appreciate it, thank you. i'll start digging for for that guide!

in the meantime ive found this video which is a good start:

Agree, sounds like starter retraction is slow. I’ve just changed my starter for a refurbed one as my A2 is a daily driver and I couldn’t risk having the car off the road. I am going to refurb my old one on the bench in my own time.

hi all. my car appears to over crank on startup as shown here. any ideas?

thanks
drew

Hi Drew, agree with the others, sounds like starter motor pinion slow to retract, in my case it was the return spring in the solenoid that had weakened over time and a replacement, clean and re-grease has been good for the last year ...
