Carbon Clean 1.6FSI

Hi Every One.

I trust everybody is keeping safe during this pandemic, now your allow out to play kids!

So I mentioned in one of my posting that once lock down gave me wriggle room I would have a Carbon Clean (Tera Clean) carried out on my sub 85k miles 1.6 FSI Sport.

The reason why it took longer that the norm, my mid-section silencer exhaust to the rear needed a fix prior to the clean.

Saturday I drove a round trip of 166miles to a well know VW/Audi tuner, who carried out the carbon clean. During the drive from start to finish I took note of:-

How the car started, Warmed up, responds, acceleration, rev range engine noise etc. All the normal good stuff we moan about. With the exhaust now intact I did see a mark improvement.

Hour or so later arrived, handed over the keys and popped to a shop for hour +/- Got a call hour or so later that the car was ready.

On collection I was lucky to speak to the tekkie fella. During the clean; a fault appeared. Nox sensor which was cleared and no other fault (NOF) was in the ECU. Told me it was a tidy motor.

So 20+/-mins or so after our chat I got back into the car, from which the engine was now cold(ish). What a noticeable difference (for the better);-

Easier start (Cold starts & idle are also notably smoother)

Quieter

Much better idle

Not that the car ran badly……..

I sat for about 30/40 seconds and drove off. (Stereo with some bad arse tunes off). Car felt different more energy aided with E5/99 shell fuel. Once warm and choke off; stopped in some traffic then re-joined the M25.

Wow Wow Wow. What a marked difference. Engine is quieter; Acceleration is so much smoother throughout the entire rev range. Especially 2nd& 3rd gear changes now feel smoother and less 'clunky'. (I can drive) and the acceleration NICE……. Throttle feels much responsive. Had to do my 1st over take and boy….. All I can say; feels like an up to date hot hatch (if you get my drift). Rev’s have dropped much better all-round not so high is what I’ve noticed at 70.

The cruise home was at a different level. Engine quite… Stopped at one of the services for a latte extra shot (as you do) then continue my journey. Start was perfecto and the cruise/drive was easy. Idle Acceleration as good as pure gold, Wow, Wow Wow. The whole car feels totally different. The engine behaves so different. So smooth………..

On arrival home I allowed the car to idle as per normal for 30-45 seconds. My Son came out and remarked “Car sounds different”…….. Silent’s is golden….!

Didn’t drive the car till the following morning (7.30ish) boot camp get fit with some nutters. So a wash and tango was the order of the day. Early morning air was a little moist but dry. Engine like’s an early morning wakeup call now. Wow. Carbon clean has made a big difference worth every penny. Has given me a bench mark as to what I want from the engine. (Possible race chip tuning box)

For me it not about top end speeds. For my little beauty it’s about every day runs and being able to keep sensible pace in traffic where the need arise. And some fun. lol

That’s not to say that I won’t keep an eye on the manifold situation flap and will still consider the Pro Boost upgrade once I have a better feel from the blog reports. However for now from cold to operating temperature on local journeys and a run. Wow

To conclude; Get a Carbon Clean is more than the business.

Next in line is the suspension. That’s going to be fun……

PS. Once every 2 weeks or subject to my journey am a great believer in checking under the bonnet before I motor. As we can top up levels without removing the bonnet I still like to remove the hood and have a butchers. I call Maintenance Maintenance and Maintenance

Hope this helps anyone thinking of a carbon clean

Good to know, and thanks for the terraclean write up. Something I’ll get done around the 50-60k mark so a while yet.

There is one bit that made me chuckle:

“Stereo with some bad arse tunes off”.........very posh indeed, for me it would be “bad ass” which makes me not posh at all! 🤣🤣🤣

Hi @Chand

Puzzled by this; it appears to suggest your car now cruises at lower engine revs at 70? Can you elaborate what you actually meant - lower engine noise at that speed perhaps?

Nothing wrong with naming the garage if you are happy with their service/value. If you think this was excellent, either or both parts, you could add them to the newly created 'Recommendations' thread, something I think which should be promoted, but please only on this and not a post to sing the joys of Tera Clean.

Andy

PS. Not found the choke in my FSI yet 🤪.....those were the days... needed skill.

sounds good be nice to surprise some one with this like just get it done without them knowing anything about it and see what they think

Part of my project might see me upgrade the sound system at some point. not too much but just to provide that rumble

So I noticed on the cruises back home that in the past were the rev's appear much higher i appear closer to 3rpm than before. i shall let you know exactly once i do my next Motorway run. In general the rev's are a lot less the engine is much quieter, gear change smoother, throttle responds much better. Also need to look at MPG

Hi So I took the Car to AMD. Yes I will add some comments in to the Recommendation thread

PS. The Cold start but choke still sounds funny. ive never had a choke on any of my cars :cool:

I had @timmus fit Bose which is a welcome upgrade. You get a richer sound than the standard 8 speaker system. The sub is small so doesn’t rumble, just enriches the sound.

I have a merc with Burmester and by comparison that rumbles together with the enriched sound but it’s to be expected as it has two subwoofers and an array of speakers.

For the cost of Bose it works for me in the A2 and optimised for the aluminium structure so works well enough, you won’t get that low volume rumble though. I’d suggest have a listen with a Bose equipped car and the go from there.

My previous A2 1.4 SE had a Bose system and that rumbled well . Yes your correct aluminium gives a different resonating sound so if i move away from Bose i need to be careful. I think ill stick to Bose based on how its design in the A2 or upgrade the speakers

Unless as part of the carbon clean you're saying they swapped your gearbox, then this is simply impossible.

You will have been cruising at a slower speed.

On buying the car at the beginning of the year the car had been sitting for a while and was quite sluggish on all levels of driving. I had the car serviced and over a period the performance improved............ but a level of labouring was present with some jerkiness idle was not the best. At motor speed the car was nosier but the exhaust FIX that not major. The revs at 70 where higher. Not excessively but higher. Since the clean the engine is smoother, quieter, idle is much better and on the way back last weekend the rev's at 70 were lower than previous. all of these things I ensured i checked prior having researched the clean and driving the car for a while. and i was in 5th not 4th.
Could it be that the carbon build up has caused my use of the throttle than now making the engine work harder.

@Chand wondering if you mean lower actual engine revs, as indicated by the rev counter, or lower throttle pedal movement (hence better mpg)?
We're a bit incredulous, as actual engine revs for a given speed are fixed by the gearing, and cannot (unless the clutch is on the way out) vary.
Cheers, Mac.

Thanks Mac Engine rev's are lower. throttle is much better. Clutch is healthy
