Cold Starting Issue

i think mines a different prob to yours as yours will eventually start and seemingly is to do with leakage or loss of fuel prime. I would very cAREFULLY CHECK ALL SEALS AND PIPES FITTNGS.
mine is inexplicable to me at mo it has worked all day no probs even when i returned back to it when in the middle period
however i have little confidence long term that its cured - fingers crossed plus evrything else!

You have an air leak into the diesel system. This allows air in overnight which has to be purged upon first start, (through the self bleeding system) hence the delay.
Paradoxically, an air leak allows air into the system but does not necessarily allow diesel fuel out so ther may be no sign of leakage. It may be one of the 'built in' removable couplings on either the fuel filter or the fuel pump. They have internal o rings, which MAY be replaceable - not necessarily as an Audi part, just an o ring of those dimensions.
My money would be on the filter as it will have been disturbed more often (at service, to replace the filter)

How old are these vehicles?

Are they chassis numbers ..........

or

WAUZZZ8Z_5N000101 - 009414

Garage is going to take a look again - he thinks it maybe a dodgy fuel injector:confused:
Ill ask him to check out the fuel filter seals as you've suggested

chassis no

my chassis no is wauzzz8z44n0117667

i think
got it service shcedule book

conked out on me agin last night otuside school so this time i unhooked the temp sensor that plugs into the alu tube across the front of the engine got back in and it started this if that was the temp sender lins up with member pgodoe's experience

can get a photo to you tonight but it's definitely not the air mass meter it is the connector right in the middle of the front of the car that is attached to an aluminium tube which i presumed was the temp sensor for coolant etc
photo shows it well...

That picture shows the intake manifold air pressure sender. Early cars had the sender in the charge cooler and it was a dual function sender which also measured charge air temps (not sure if this later version does this)

The coolant temp sender sticks out of a small water manifold at the back of the cyl head. Body colour of the sender is usually green.

Cheers Spike

well i'll just have to wait til it happens next time to see if it really does do the trick in starting the car with that one unplugged

Fixed!!!!!!

At last, its fixed and it was down to the Fuel Filter - mechanic said it was in rather a state , black and swollen, causing the restriction of fuel when trying to start up, this is what will have killed the original fuel pump.
He felt that the fuel filter had never been changed - not good for a A2 with full Audi service history over the last 44000 miles.
Thanks Spike /maersk, for your help.
