Comedy footwell time :)

would need to seal it well and maybe protect the cone from you steping on it

Absolutely.. I'm planning on making a fibreglass enclosure which can just drop in.. and there will be a very substancial grill over it too..

hmmm. seems like a good idea. however not to sure.... From the example pic, you have posted, it looks like the sub is place in the front passenger side foot well, this is all good but don't you want the bass to spread around the whole of the car? or will placing it in the front footwell spread the sound? in all my cars the sub always been placed in an MDF enclosure in the boot, so the bass could push plenty of air in the boot, and the bass hit the back of the tailgate which from there spread on to the roof, and then onto the rest of the car.
but then again i'm not to sure if placin it in the front well would do the job,
let me know once you did it, cheers.

Hi Mason, still busy, aren't you?

Interesting concept, which I'v read about before. However, I too could not imagine how the sound of the bass would be when it was sealed below all the foam that covers the footwell area.
I know it's just very low frequencies and I know these are neither directional nor very impressed by obstacles, but wouldn't it still sound just a littlebit 'muffled'?

And in this picture you seem to have loosely placed it on the edges. But you seem to plan on making a (small) box and put that in the footwell space? Or could you also make an MDF cover to replace the existing aluminium one, with the speaker slightly recessed (and with a grille).

Please elaborate :). Fiberglass is not for me, in these situations, but MDF might be. I really want to loose that huge bass reflex box that I have now (>50 liters of trunk space lost...)

Maybe these pictures help....

Nope :) To me they show lots of (probably highend) crossovers and amps stashed in the footwell. And an alternative location for the sub: in the trunk. But it still does not show the encasing of that sub.

Anything else?
Cheers,

Edo

Sorry, I am absolutely clueless when it comes to car-hifi...:) But that is the most extensive A2-installation that I know of (besides EF MAX´s). If you are interested, I can ask the owner which encasing he used for the sub... (he lives not far away from me)

Hi guys..

The components I use (6.5's) are currently crossed over at around 40 hz.. So all I'm really adding the sub is for the really low stuff.

I may up the crossover point to around 60 hz, then run the sub from 50 down.
Below 50hz the sub should (in theory) be invisible in terms of where it comes from.

Subs are only really placed in the boot because it's the only place they will actually fit, firing them backwards is the norm though. The only real disadvantage of having one up front is that they are considerably louder, so you have to make sure the sub is secured very well, otherwise they'll be lots of rattles to contend with..

Swiv

The picture I posted was only a provisional test which I did at a car audio show.. and one of the options I have considered is to add an MDF baffle to replace the alu cover.. The issue there is getting the cabinet sealed well enough, and the bottom of the compartment is also quite thin. I've already added several sheets of sound deadening, but it's still not strong enough to be a sub enclosure. So if I do go down the MDF top sheet route I'll still have to fibreglass/mdf the bottom of the enclosure.

If the bottom could be made strong enough then all you'd have to do is seal a few small holes here and there which should be quite simple..

In terms of the sub being able to fire through the carpet the plan is to cut the foam out over the sub, I'll then make the grill/spacer so the sub can move. I'll also cut through the standard mats and use some strong grill cloth or another permeable cloth to let the bass through.

This way it shouldn't sit too much higher than the standard mats. This sub has a 2 inch peak to peak excursion. A more normal sub should be much easier to fit and should be easy enough to hide completely..

My most likely course of action is still to make a fibreglass or partial fibreglass/MDf box.. I may even make a mould for it if anyone is interested..

If you guys ever have any technical questions you can always try www.talkaudio.co.uk It's a UK based car audio forum. Erskine and I have been on it for years :)

Thanks for that Mason. I'm no specialist in this area, but I was thinking along the same lines as you were/are.

I've been on the talkaudio forum (last time you mentioned it) and it indeed has an enormous amount of information and obviously some very knowledgable people. The footwell and the false floor in the back are a bit A2-specific, I guess, but the same rules apply.

I might start remodeling my car when temps go above 15 degrees and when I sell my old Sony stuff.....and after I've lingered around here and on talkaudio a bit longer. Lots to learn and lots to do!

Cheers,
Edo

When I finally do it I'll try and write down how it comes together.. I've got to re-do my footwell pods first though.. They sound much better angled so it's time to rebuild them...

Cheers
