Dicky Temperature Gauge

Recently, I have noticed that my temp gauge has started playing up (at least I hope it's the gauge and not the engine itself).

It always used to sit smack on 90 but now can be anywhere between 82 ish and 90. This is not too much of a problem, but some times the gauge does not move at all. It will sit at rest and then, say, 30 mins later quickly rise to 90. Sometimes it rises to about 70 and then drops back down. It never goes above 90 though.

Is this indication of a problem with the gauge or the sensor? Maybe a poor connection or something? Or is it indicative of something more sinister? More importantly, is the engine control unit working out fueling levels based on temperature or is it calculated elsewhere?

Are there any checks I can do myself? Coolant looks OK and it never overheats or has any leaks.

Cheers,

Cheers Spike. I will see if I can get a new sender to try out first. Seems the easiest and most likely solution. The symptoms all sound virually the same as mine too.

Many, many thanks.
