Okay so I'm following some advice I got on a post I made the other day about boost cut out and changing the diesel filter. I got the filter that euro car parts said would match my number plate but it seems I have a canister type on the car at the moment rather than one with a changable paper filter.
It also looks to me like the current filter is held on in a slightly DIY style but that might just be how its supposed to be.

Does anyone know whats up here? Have I just got the wrong filter type or is there something else going on?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Riot.

The correct part number for these early filters is AUDI 8Z0 127 435.

Other suitable Diesel Fuel filters are BOSCH 0 450 906 453 and AUDI 057 127 401 D or BluePrint ADV182311

Just changed mine today, and judging by the date code, it appears to be the original. After 81K Miles and nearly 23 years of service, I'm surprised it wasn't blocked up!

That's mental!

Does it run any better, was the fuel in it dirty?

Did you prime your new filter?
You are so right! This AMF car was registered on 1st March 2001 (thereby being one of the first £30/year car tax), and the filter date code was week 02 of 2001. It may of course have been changed once at most, but not for many years!

The car does go noticeably better, and is much keener to rev to the dizzy heights of 4000 RPM (only testing in the interests of science you understand ;) ). The fuel came out clean, but I haven't had a chance to chop up the filter yet to see how dirty it was. Hopefully the previous one owner had used good fuel all along...

I filled the filter about 3/4 full with fresh Diesel before refitting it, and the car started and run just fine. I let it idle for ten minutes before driving it, to make sure all was well.
