I need some help on choosing an A2, and this seems like the best place on the web.

I'm looking to purchase a Audi A2 (prob. from Audi Main dealer) and didin't know which was the better one to go for in terms of costs.

I currently drive a BMW 316i Coupe and travel about 100 miles a day and was looking for a small economical car.

Due to the ever increasing price of diesel (93.9p per litre being the local price) what would be the better buy a 1.4 TDI (90ps) or a 1.4 Petrol equivalent?

Please help!!!

Many Thanks,

J@y

Is this new or used?
I don't think they make the 90ps version any more, just the 75. It's the same problem we had when buying ours- we decided on a 1.4 Sport 90ps, so bought nearly new.
Very glad we went for the diesel, on average we get 50mpg - others get more than that. It pulls like a train, it will cruise all day at 100mph (allegedly) and it's first service isn't for another 25K miles!

Thanks for the reply, I'm probably looking at a used one.

Do you have anyy idea what the service costs (from main dealers are and also if the diesel is noisier than the petrol?

Many Thanks,

J@y

Definitely go for the diesel. And it is not just about economy. Yes you get more MPG per liter of fuel (and with the A2's rediculously small fuel tank every extra mile helps) but more about torque. The extra pull the TDI has in every gear is amazing. Once in 5th you never have to gear down on the motorway to overtake or do hills. Not even when the car is full of people and luggage. The petrol version can't dream of doing that as it does not have the same amount of torque... You have to gear down and even then it won't keep up with a TDI fully loaded up a hill. Yes, it is noisier but being a 3 cylinder it sounds more like a Porsche than a diesel Montego believe me. Servicing is every 32000 miles for the diesel! So cost per mile is very VERY low. Tax is low too and insurance.

Also avoid the Sport versions as they are just too bloody hard in the suspension department (unless you like that!) The normal one is hard enough believe me.

From several days with petrol 1.4 A2s, and recent ownership of a 1.4 TDi (75):

Diesel is definitely louder than petrol around town. On the motorway / dual carriageway it quietens down rather nicely and I think that at a 70mph cruise the diesel is quieter. A reasonable amount of torque, low weight and good aerodynamics mean that it's not working too hard.

Mine has the antidote to noise: the BOSE stereo (with iPod integration [8D]). Just turn it up and you won't know you have an engine...

Cheers, Richard.

Johann/Viffer,

Thanx for the replies, I think I will definately go for the 1.4 TDI (90ps), just a couple more questions:

1. Is the iPod integration standard with the Bose stereo, or are you using an iTrip?
2. If the car does not come with a spare wheel, can you buy this afterwards?

Also, do you know anyone who wants to buy a 95' BMW 316i Coupe with 102k on the clock!!!! (only joking)

Many Thanks,

J@y

Agree 100%.

That's worth looking out for in fact: fuel tank got bigger on all models around the time that the 1.6 FSi was introduced. Mine has a 42-litre tank which is fine, but the early ones were too small.

Personally I think they're both fine. But I like hard suspension. A2's are pretty soft compared with my RS4...

Cheers, Richard.

Not standard. I'm using a Dension ICE link which plugs into the back of the head unit and pretends to be a CD changer, so you select iPod playlists / skip tracks using the head unit buttons. Your iPod plugs into the ICE Link using the standard a iPod dock connector, and it charges the iPod while you drive.

Look on the main A2OC website www.A2OC.net . I published a guide there on how to retrofit the bracket to hold the space saver spare in place. Though mine travelled down there for 18 months before I fixed it to the car with no trouble. Just add a few things in there (as one does) to keep it in place. Though the installation of the bracket is very easy (as the guide will show).

Also click on the Search at the top of this page and tick the Archive box to search all the old topics you can't see anymore. Search for iPod there and you will find lots of discussion on how it is done. I have the BOSE too with the Symphony 2 radio with 6 disk CD and tape. So I use a tape adaptor to link iPod to car. The Dension ICE link is far superior but also far more expensive.

Hey everyone! This was the exact same question i was going to ask! Looking to get one for me first car but people keep telling me the petrol will be a lot quicker? Is this truth or a loada rubbish?

On paper the 1.6 petrol is quicker than the 1.4 75 PS, but it doesn't feel like it when you drive it. The 1.6 also has to be driven hard to get the most from it and fuel economy suffers, the diesel doesn't need to be revved higher than 3,000 rpm for maximum performance.

Just had a 1.6 as a loan car found it totally gutless and thirsty, 35 mpg compared to my 55+ mpg, wouldn't like to have tried it when we go camping I doubt it would have moved, glad to get my tdi back.

tdiman that sounds like a summary of my linked post above of the 1,4 petrol I had as a courtesy car too... If the 1,6 feels like that imagine the 1,4!

I find my 1.4 ok. Yes its not quick but if you want a car that goes quick then you buy one with a sporty engine. I am getting 50 miles per gallon from my 1.4 A2 and that to me is more important than being able to get from a to b in the quickest time possible.

1.4 PETROL A2 BLACK WITH OPEN SKY AND REAR BENCH SEAT

In the real world you and I will get from A to B in much the same time. The thing is the TDI is just more relaxed in doing it. You never gear down to overtake, go up a hill when the car is full of people/things and it just pulls like a rocket in every gear. The 0-60 and top speed are exactly the same...

We all get used to our cars and my opinions expressed above is because I'm used to my TDI's urge and can't ever see myself in a petrol... You are used to the petrol. Me having never felt the 3,9 seconds 0-60 of a Ferrari Enzo, I can't exactly yearn for it or know what it feels like... But you get used to what you have and drive within its means. I'm just trying to paint a picture for someone that still has the choice between the two engines as to why TORQUE is the real difference and what torque does in real life...
