Diesel Turbo Cutting Out

Can anyone help in sorting this problem? Intermittent fault on turbo-will tend to cut out under acceleration, typically upon motorway incline. Resets to normal upon switching ignition off and back on again. Main Dealer response is "new turbo,£962.78, as boost pressure over boosting"! I can't believe this is necessary to resolve such an intermittent problem.
Also my Open Sky Sunroof is faulty with nearside motor fault. Can this be repaired vs "new complete sunroof £1641.23"-if not it'll just remain securely shut.
Thanks

Hi Spike
Thanks for your help. Upon opening the sunroof it starts to open and the offside keeps opening. The nearside stops and starts to make a noise like cogwheel teeth slipping. With manual pulling or pushing to the nearside it's possible to open and close with another person holding the power switch. I think another thread relates to this but I'm still unclear how to make progress. Obtaining replacement parts seems difficult. Do you have any more thoughts?
Thanks

Hi Daniel
Thanks for the recommendation about the site. As I said to Spike the nearside of the sunroof will stick then make a loud noise which sounds like slipping/jumping cogwheel teeth. I'm not sure how to get at it and if I can how to obtain new parts.
Best wishes
Robin

Turbo cutting out

Hi, I've just joined the forum but noticed your problem exactly matched my own a while back. After scouring the forum for ideas with nothing tried resolving the problem, I finally (reluctantly) resorted to asking my local Audi/VW specialist garage (not a Audi dealer note!) to take a look. They had the vehicle for several days and tried ALL of the valves/pipes and usual things that cause similar problems to no avail.
Basically the ECU was seeing an overboost condition every time I started the car and accelerated. The ECU then went into a 'safe' mode which prevents any boost by bypassing the turbo (holds the wastegate wide open I believe) and the car was sluggish and maxxed at 50mph. No indication is given that this has happened as the ECU doesn't appear that clever at showing an ECU fault light. Stopping the car and restarting reset the ECU every time but the problem immediately reappeared next time it boosted.
Finally they removed the turbo and found that the wastegate was sticking slightly. They dismantled the wastegate flap (crude device...), quickly polished the wastegate shaft to remove corrosion and refitted it, all within 90 mins eventually. The car's even better than before now and no problems in 18months. Incidentally the car had done 53,000 miles only. I was charged a whopping £105 all in for 3 days tinkering! Hope that helps (if you can find a similarly experienced, honest and trustworthy garage (or do it yourself).

Hi A2 Terrier, welcome to the A2oc.
Thanks for sharing your findings on a different but very logical reason for the TDi engine going into limp home mode under load.

Cheers Spike

@Terrier - care to share the name of such a seemingly excellent garage?
@Robin - are you any closer to finding your solution yet?

Hi dan b,

The garage I use is called Challenge Motor Company in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Run and operated by enthusiastic experts...:)

Turbo problem...

I had the exact same problem on my previous A2. It turned out to be a tiny pin hole in the turbo pipe. The turbo used to drop out at around 60 mph usually on an incline. I used to stop the car, switch off, then re-start my engine, hey presto... everything back to normal. I think the pipe was situated in the bulk head area at the rear of the engine on the left hand facing side, (looking from the front of the vehicle under the bonnet) The repairer replaced the pipe and everything worked OK. Not sure if you have sorted the problem yet.
Ian

You're not the only one, although they're not quite as 100% now they've expanded as you're not guaranteed to get Ian or Rob working on the car, but good nevertheless.
