When you lock the car the display should go out ... shouldn't it?

Don't know about it wearing out, but i had faults with DIS on my former VW Golf and Audi A3. The red LED started fading and on the A3 it was unreadable in warm weather. Was told this was a common issue and the Golf was fixed under warranty but the A3 was older so i was stuck with it or a £400+ bill for a new speedo unit. Dont know enough about A2's to comment on wherther they can go awry. But I'll be keeping ours switched on anyway to marvel at the MPG
