Drivers door missalignment

Our 04 Tdi has just been returned from service & MOT, as the drivers door has been missaligned for some time we asked the dealers to adjust it while it was there, this is the second attempt at the job, the first time the car was just within the warranty period prior to it's first MOT.

Our dealer has now said it cannot be realigned & requires a trip to an approved bodyshop, (card supplied) should we be worried?
They are sudgesting wind damage or "someone may have opened the door too wide", the check strap has just started making a slight clicking noise.

They have said the hinges need to be replaced so I asked if the problem was with cracking, they were suprised I knew of a problem with cracks around the hinges & said they had only just recieved a buletin about it but it wasn't the problem we are experiencing & as such not covered by the buletin or waranty.

What should we do next?, although I would like to think the dealer is being helpfull, I cant help feeling that the issues we raised with missalignment should have been sorted by the them without the need for us to vissit the bodyshop with an open wallet.

Advice greatfully recieved

Unless the alignment is causing noise or an inability to lock th e door properly, the dealer is within their rights to refer you to a specialist bodyshop, especially if the door strap is now cracking (i.e. it isn't doing its job due to some physical failure).

The best bet is to repair the strap yourself if able (if you can make it to me, I will gladly do the job far cheaper than a dealer) and assess alignment then. If the cracking warrants repair, then you can go back about it (again, I'll assess whether it warrants repair).

The cracking of the door stay is a real hamper to any further progress to be honest and this needs sorting before other measures can be implemented.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks for the prompt reply Mike,
Will have a go at the door strap myself as removal of the door card sounds straightforward & the fix within my skills.

Havn't really had chance to inspect the hinges (my wifes car) so this I will do over the weekend.

After the first attempt at realignment all seamed ok, door closed perfect but we did find that wind noise increased substantialy, unfortunatley I don't drive her car very often & only found out 3 months after they had done the first fix, my wife hadn't noticed because she doesn't do any motorway driving & this is where it really shows up.

Will repost after Iv'e had the chance to inspect her car closer, cheers
