Drivers side door lock

Hi Taylor ... I swapped out one of the door locks from a VW Golf as an experiment ... the part number was the same apart from the prefix for the car type ... and these are readily available new, if it helps.

Hi Tom, The lock arrived and the door stripped. Unfortunately the locks are too different to fit; even though the part number matched

So to clarify. You can fit it, and the central locking will work, but the mechanical catch that connects to the handle rod is incorrectly orientated. The locks would require the pins grinding out or cutting and welding to correct latch

Hi Taylor, yep, that doesn't look right at all, not sure what I can say other than the back left is identical, I swapped one straight from a golf to try before buying a new one from EBay for £25 .... surely they will refund?

Yes that works unless the mechanical half has a worn door locking pawl or the coating has broken up and causing door open microswitch issues.

Good man Taylor, if it works then you have pioneered a sustainable fix .... sorry if I gave you duff advice before 👴
😔Sadly not a fix. Thought I was on the home run, however; The main connectors are a different configuration and shape and I cannot swap out the guts of the pcb as the interior mounting is on the opposite side of the clam shell with different mounting points, so we now now they are not interchangeable.

Is the o/s rear door the same as the drivers lock?

Any idea as to where I can get one to fit?

Thanks for all the help guys

And of course the pcb is soldered to the connector- so I can't swap those around. I'm going to cut and swap the microswitch to see if that was the issue as I cannot see any visible breaks on the original pcb

Not a great deal of assistance at this red hot moment, but timmus comes down for his annual surgery in Leighton Buzzard in a few months time.

He has fixed more A2 door locks than anyone on the planet (I would think), including all four on Battersea.

Welcome to this wonderful club.

Afternoon Taylor,

Sorry to read your woes and really thought you might have solved your issue.

I have a known good driver lock mechanism here still fitted inside the drivers door. I will be able to get it removed and packaged up during the week if you’re interested. Of course it’s a used unit so as Graham @audifan states, could go wrong at anytime. Right here and now though it is fine.

I see the new units linked within this thread are actually quite cheap so happy to remove this known good one for you at £10 plus delivery. Drop me a PM if this offering might be of use to you.

Kind regards,

Tom

The o/s rear door most definitely isn't the same as the driver's lock.

Tom's given you an offer of a working lock for the driver's door which I think you should take up.

Alternatively, I previously linked to this driver's lock:

which has definitely been fitted to an A2 in the past. It requires minor alteration to fit, covered in detail in this thread:

I was surprised you didn't go for that lock from the outset, given that the hard work (establishing how to fit it) had already been done.

Apologies Steve, that was my fault, I suggested to Taylor that the Golf one would fit as the same brand worked for my nearside rear ... I'm now wondering if that one sent is for a left hand drive.

Many thanks Simon. We've already been in contact, trying to coax him with a warm workshop!😁

Hi Steve. I bought the lock on the link, they must have sent the wrong one as there is no way it would have fitted. The pictures I attached show the clear difference, tbh it looks like a rear one was sent!

That indeed appears likely.

For clarity, the link Tomscar originally provided:

is not the same as the link I provided:

Both those links are from the same eBay seller and the same manufacturer, but the locks are slightly different.

Many thanks Steve, at least I know where I've gone wrong now. I've sent a message for the used one, so hopefully all sorted early next week.
