Emergency Toolkit - Contents?

There has been a lot of postings recently talking of split hoses and with the age of our cars it is clearly becoming a more regular occurence.

As I am about to venture across europe again on a 3000 mile trip it made me think that it may be a good idea to take some tape for emergency repairs.

I then thought that maybe it should be part of an emergency toolkit but being mechanically incompetent, I am not really sure what I should take. So I thought why not ask the people that know.

So peeps what would you recommend as essentials for a small compact emergency tool kit???

I would buy a spare wheel (the Golf mk 3 5 stud spare has been mentioned) and a complete pack of bulbs, would save being pulled for a blown bulb

apart from that, a first aid kit, triangle and warning vest are a legal requirement in much of Europe.

For the tool kit, I'd look at:
- screwdrivers: tx20, 25, philips, flathead - I have a mini draper ratchet driver which is very useful in combination with a large set of bits
- small penknife (i prefer sheath knives these days, but that's just me)
- amalgamating tape
- electricians tape
- gaffa tape
- a tow rope
- pair of pliers, small to medium size.

That should do for a start.
