Engine Management Light

Hey guys, thanks for the advice on the cambelt, gonna get it sorted at 70,000 to be safe. Anyhoo, here's another little one for y'all. My engine management warning light comes on when I turn the key in the ignition, but goes out as soon as I start the engine and doesn't return. Is this normal?

Perfectly normal. The usual state for the warning light is on (yes on). That is a default setting so that in the event of a failure of the engine management system, the light will come on (say that power is lost to this part of the cars systems, then if the default state was off, you'd never know of a problem).

The light comes on for a few seconds to show you that the bulb (or LED actually) is working and then extinguishes as the engine management takes over. If the light didn't come on when you turned the key, that's when to be worried.

Cheers,

Mike

Great. Thanks a lot guys. I have to say, it's brilliant for clueless owners like myself to have access to a site like this!!!
