Expansion tank

Hi all,

Every few hundred miles the temp gauge sign appears on the display of my wife's 1.6 FSI (2003). The expansion tank then requires topping up with probably about 3/4 pint and it the warning light disappears.

I have replaced the screw cap on the expansion tank as the old one seemed 'loose' and had a quick scan over the hoses etc but can't seem to locate a leak.

Coolant left in the bottle is clean, no gunk etc.

The car has done just short of 60,000 so needs cambelt, waterpump etc soon I guess but just wondered if anyone had had the same /similar issues or any ideas as to the cause?

thanks in advance

Is there white smoke coming out the exhaust ?, as the head gasket could have blown across to the cylinder, but then it normally boils the water

And there are no puddles on the floor ?

that was quick! No white smoke but occasionally a puddle on the floor but normally only if the a/c has been on.

Hoping not an expensive fix as I have been a recent victim of the redundancy axe!

exactly what I was thinking - easier for the garage to stick it up on the ramps and have a good inspection I guess!

thanks for your help!
