Faulty TEMP gauge

I have just purchased a 2002 1.6 FSi Sport. Unfortunately, the temperature gauge works 1% of the time. By that I mean it just doesnt work but on the odd occasion it springs to life and registers at 12 o'clock.

Question I have is what could be causing this?
Is a sensor somewhere in the engine bay and if so whereabouts?
Is this 'AUDI only' or can I sort it with the right tools and parts?

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.
:D

I had the same problem on my 1.4 petrol recently,it appears to have been caused by damp getting in when I hosed the engine bay down.

A good run down the motorway(160miles)in one hit appears to have generated enough heat to dry all the moisture up and sorted it.

However yours could be a completely different fault/problem.

Temperature Gauge at 0

90% likely the Temperature Sender Unit , mines a 2002 1.4 petrol, was told its common amongst the VAG range as they all share similar parts.Checked with a better Audi delaer & the oart costs £27 ish .They charge £150 to replace it though so i got a local VW garage to do it .Works fine now .If replacement doesnt work then it could be the Thermostat..Good luck
