The new 2004 A3 Sportback is the five-door version of Audi's A3 hatchback. The Sportback is characterised by the sporting elegance of a coupé and the versatility of a five-door and almost has an estate look to it.
It comes with four and six-cylinder engines developing up to 184 kW, front-wheel or quattro permanent four-wheel drive and, as an option, DSG transmission.
With the introduction of the Sportback, Audi is also launching an all-new turbo engine: the 2.0 TFSI, a four-cylinder unit with turbocharger, delivering 147 kW. Its maximum torque of 280 Nm is available across a wide speed range from 1 800 to 5 000 r/min.
As a result, the A3 2.0 TFSI (with 6-speed manual gearbox) is able to complete the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.1 seconds, and continues on up to a top speed of 234 km/h.
Sporty qualities
Audi says the new Sportback is "deliberately going its own, new way in the compact class".
According to Audi it offers the "emphatically sporty qualities and the athletic styling" of the three-door version with which it shares its drive train, dynamic suspension and wheelbase.
At the same time - as well as two rear doors - it offers even more space and variability thanks to its rear-end which is 83mm longer than on its three-door counterpart.
Boot space is 370 litres and increases to 1 120 litres with the rear seat back folded down.
A new large-area glass sunroof, known as "open sky", has been developed especially for the Sportback, gives occupants a clear view of the sky and can be opened wide if required.
New grille
The A3 Sportback features Audi's new single-frame radiator grille, which is now the distinctive mark of the Audi brand.
The rest of the car's nose design and headlights are similar to that of the A3 three-door model.
The silhouette of the A3 Sportback when viewed from the side becomes flatter towards the rear of the car. It comes with optional roof rails which gives the car a sportier stance.
Its new rear lights accentuates the trapezoidal design of the rear end. The design of the these lights was inspired by Audi's striking Nuvolari concept car and the A8.
The Sportback shares its interior design with the three-door model and it comes with a range of standard and optional comfort features.
Engine range
3.2 V6 developing 184 kW, 320 Nm
2.0 TFSI developing 147 kW, 280 Nm
2.0 FSI developing 110 kW, 200 Nm
1.6 FSI developing 85 kW, 155 Nm
1.6 developing 75 kW, 148 Nm
2.0 TDI developing 103 kW, 320 Nm
1.9 TDI developing 77 kW, 250 Nm.
Depending on the chosen engine, a 5 or 6-speed manual gearbox is fitted. The Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) is optional.
I really like the rear lights... very nice. Even the new front vertical grille looks nice. AND it says in the blurb it will come with Open Sky!!! I love my roof and can't ever see myself in a car without such a big sunroof. The 3 door A3's sunroof us pathetically small... Can't wait to see the allroad though!
