Flashing glowplug & P3007 Camshaft Position Sensor (G40)

2 days ago whilst driving along I got the flashing glowplug on the dash. It lasted for about 8 miles and then extinguished so I thought I'd plug the laptop in (VCDS-Lite Shareware) and run a scan. There was only one fault code to be found which was:

19463 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40) : No Signal
P3007 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Because I only have the shareware version it doesn't give me the date and time of the code being logged so I've cleared the fault and will monitor on an ongoing basis until it reoccurs. Does anyone have any advice as to whether this is well known, critical or otherwise? I don't see too much info on that fault by searching the forums so I'm guessing it's not too common.

The car seems to be running OK.

Cheers,

Iain

Failure of the cam positon sensor is not critical as the ECU uses the signal from the crank sensor as a back-up. The main downside is that on start-up the engine takes a few revs to work out which cylinder is on the firing / injection stroke so starting takes a bit more cranking.

The Ross Tech fault code listing gives a bit more info on the codes - http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/19463/P3007/012295

Thanks Spike. Comforting to know.

Does anyone know if it's an expensive part and if it's an easy DIY replacement or is it a more involved job that I'd be better taking it to the garage for?

The car did fail to start on first attempt this morning but fired at the second try with no warning lights.
