Front brake discs & pads on a 1.4 TDi

The brake pad warning on my DIS went off this morning, and at the last MOT the tester said my discs were in poor condition.

I've read on previous threads that the Mintex pads/discs are good (£70 on Ebay incl. postage).

Is it worth the hassle of getting these and handing them to the garage to fit, or should I simply instruct my trusty local VW/Audi independent to "change the discs & pads"?

Id have no hesitation recommending the mintex parts Graham after fitting them last July. Its probably worth asking your trusted Indy what supplier they use and the all important 'how much' then google the brand to find some others viewpoints. Im sure they wont be phased about fitting parts you have sourced yourself.

Heres where I got mine as recommeded by Skip and a wee bit cheaper than the ones you quoted:

I've used Mintex and Febi Bilstein brakes in the past and can recommend both.

I've bought parts from this Ebay seller. He's a Merc specialist, but does stock other marques too.

He's a helpful seller so if you can't find what you're after in the shop send him a message and he'll get back with a quote. I once saved 40% on brakes compared to some online shops. :)

If it wasn't for the low price, I think I prefer the OE disc/pads than the mintex. There isn't much between the OE and mintex, but my previous OE set felt ever so slightly better at cold. But for sixty odd quid and no labour DIY, it is a very cheap alternative. I would also be interested to find out who makes the OE pads/discs and may get them from GSF or other suppliers.

I fitted the Mintex pads and discs to our A2 a couple of months ago and they are very good indeed. I would have no hesitation in recommending them. They cost me £60 delivered from an eBay seller and all came as a single kit.

Im thinking of getting some mintex but I will want to fit them myself. Not have touched an audi braking system can anyone recommend a good tutorial on how these are fitted?

Thanks
Andy

Im not sure about mintex as ive not used them.
But i can recommend ferodo premier discs and pads there very good but im not sure how much they cost as i work for the company that owns the brand and get them for cost plus a bit.

Andy, to replace the front discs and pads isn't particularly tricky, but you do need to be careful and also, need a few tools too.

Firstly, you MUST disengage the pad wear indicator plug before you do anything else (having removed the wheel obviously!). If you don't, you will break it and it's something that you won;t want to replace.

Secondly, you'll need a caliper wind back tool to do the job properly and also, an impact driver to remove the little disc retaining screw.

Make sure that the pins are properly aligned before you torque them up after replacement, as if you cross thread them, you'll ruin the carrier, which is a one piece affair with the hub and bearing assembly.

Always work with the car on axel stands and always have the entire front end raised to minimise strain on the ARB and links.

Cheers,

Mike
