Gear knob removal.

How does the (SE) gear knob part from the gaiter?

With difficulty.
I used a hair drier to heat the plastic collar then twisted / pulled the collar until it came off

Ok got the knob off by cutting the collar as suggested.
Next problem, there is a rubber gasket at the base of the gear stick.
Mine has a couple of tears. I can not find the part number can anyone help please. image.jpg
Last question, how does the gear knob come off the gear stick? There appears to be a metal crimp around the plastic prongs on the gear knob.[/ATTACH]

Release the metal clip by unlatching it then the knob will pull off the shaft with ease
I repaired my rubber gator with super glue and piece of push bike inner tube
I fashioned a new gator from strips of the inner tube then glued together. Does not look prity but does the job a treat. Add some talcum powder to the inside and outside when done

Just tried to get the collar from the local Audi
8Z0 711 184. Saldy it appears to NLA.
Which is a bit of a bummer.

If it's the metal collar you don't really need it to be honest Simon. I have push fitted my gear lever on and it always stays put with no difference when changing gear. I do recall using a small jubilee clip in the past though if this helps.
