Help!!! Engine's running very rough!!

Hey people,

Got the 1.4 TDi

Last wednesday it started to run very rough. At idle it has a tapping sound and when revs rise it sounds really rough with alot of heavy vibration which carries all through the rev range, worst at 1250rpm....

Have replaced the injector wiring loom as I know they can be problematic but no different... and cambelt is fine also..

Does anyone have any ideas what it can be???

I own a garage and currently have a 1.4 tdi in with same symptoms,took engine out and found that the drive train for the balancer shaft was shot. Balancer shaft therefore completely out of sync with engine and sloppy.Took me a while and lot of research to get idea of poss fault. just now need to double check info for timing marks on chain if anyone has a workshop manual.
Just realised original post is from my son,it's his car i have in! lol

That's the first balancer problem we have heard of here. What's the mileage?
