Help needed this week in Stroud area!

Hello From the beautiful Stroud valleys, where I am on holiday.

I know I’m new here and haven’t yet posted much (there are good reasons for this which I won’t go into here!) and I hate to be both new and immediately needy, but…

…I’ve had to call the RAC (which I have through my insurance) as the ‘red battery’ charging light came on towards the end of my drive here from Nottingham. Obviously I suspect the alternator is about to fail but need it checking and today the RAC have called me back and informed me that I must find a suitable garage and call them back to arrange a tow there.

Can anyone on here recommend a VWG-friendly garage in the Stroud area? I have a strong battery in my A2 FSI and although I haven’t driven it since Saturday, I imagine it will start and drive so I might as well take it somewhere myself, if that’s the RAC’s attitude.

Many thanks in advance for any useful pointers; please only suggest garages / mobile mechanics though, as I have no more than basic tools available and am on a working holiday which I am trying not to disrupt too much!

All the best, WG.

VASS in Bath are very good, worth ringing them because they just might know someone a bit closer. If not, there's lots to do in Bath.

There will hopefully be more words of wisdom heading your way.

Best of luck,

Simon

@terrywindy1 thank you and thanks Simon and Edd for your replies, too. I have had a google around and found Volkswagen & Audi Centre, Bridgend Garage, Blake Services and A1 Motor Services, all nearby enough. I’ll try Bridgend first!

I had a failed alternator and have first hand experience.

As to driving to a garage, it depends how near the end of your journey the red battery symbol appeared and how healthy and charged was your battery at the time. I got about 5 miles before the battery charge was depleted enough for the engine to die and leave me stranded. I too am a RAC member and after a wait of 3 hours they arrived, listened to symptoms and swapped in a fully charged battery. Confirmed failed alternator and escorted me about 10 miles home and then swapped my old battery back in.

I suggest you beg and borrow a battery charger and recharge fully and you will be okay to drive to a local garage as long as it is not too far away.

(To conclude, I had my alternator refurbished and Evri managed to lose it during its delivery home, as A2Steve said, Evri lose every parcel. Never use Evri their claims process is a nightmare.)
