We get a hiss from one of the rear speakers - possibly the tweeter mounted near the door handle. This noise is constant even if the radio if off - and very annoying as its in your right lughole all the time you're driving. Our stereo is a Symphony II - non Bose.
Does anyone know if the rear speakers are active (powered from a separate amp). This might go some way to explaining it. But our old car never did it. ?????

Don't drink drive! Not only is it socially unaceptable, it also harms A2's.
Was a 1.4SE petrol. http://www.audi-a2.co.uk/uk14.htm http://www.audi-a2.co.uk/safety.htm
New A2 - Ebony Black, Red Leather, CC, Symphony + all the previous options we had.

ISTR from the Symphony II manual that it has 4 amplified outputs and 4 line-level outputs which suggests that the rear speakers are likely to be active. I'm sure that someone with more concrete knowledge will be along shortly, however [9]

Hmm. Difficult to trace.
If the backspeaker are active, then the amp is supposed to be in the stowage area below the passenger seat/feet, right? Lift the carpet (no rough force needed - only need to uncover the cover below) and unlock the compartment (three or four plastic 'nuts' that need to twisted 90 degrees to unlock them - lift the cover while sliding slightly towards the front of the car.
In my car, this area is empty. But your's might have an amp-thing. See if you can disconnect it from power. Not a permanent solution, but it is a beginning.

Moreover, I found that my home-placed dash tweeters were also hissing lately. They also do that with the radio off (but the front does need to be attached).
Right now I'm convinced that the hiss only occurs when the preheater is on, i.e. when temp is below 5 degrees or something. However, a petrol A2 might not have a preheater like the diesels do.

Another reason might be badly placed wiring behind the radio. I removed and replaced my own radio this weekend and I also suspect this could be a cause (in my case). Wiring had very little room behind the radio. Don't know about the Symphony though.

So: Ask your dealer to 'reseat' the radio nicely. And if that doesn't help: ask them to check radio earthing (also a cause for many noises).
