Hmm, misfiring TDi

So, went out this morning, hideous misfires for 3 miles, switched off and parked up for 20mins, got going again and no misfire. No misfire for rest of day either after four other drives during the day.

Went to Halfords, they don't sell fault code readers anymore, argh. Just bought one of the fleabay, will see if there are any errors logged.

Terrible misfires this eve with surging and really lumpy. Then abs and traction control lights came on along with the red warning light symbol on the DIS. The misfire pattern then changed to more predictable but constantly lumpy with no power at all Im guessing limp home mode tripped and boost disabled. This now sounds like the loom? Warnings went with a restart but car still running terribly. Error code reader hasnt arrived yet bloody postal strike but maybe should order loom anyway? Car is awful to drive right now.

Certainly looking that way dan, the lights you are describing seem to be common with this issue and certainly were for me. A scan of course will make certain as it will point to injector solenoid wiring.

Theres been a couple of recent cases on here where injector harness has cured despite some dealers wanting to change all three injectors at vast expense!

Loom ordered from Stoke Audi, delivery before the weekend. Hopefully I can fit on Saturday/Sunday and be back running smoothly in no time.

What beartraps do I need to look out for when fitting? How much time should I allow bent over the engine?!

Dan,

Biggest pain for me was getting the cabin inlet out of the way, two screws are hidden under the wiper cowling which requires the wiper removing to properly get at.then the plastic cowl pulls up with a sharp tug and theres two screws there.

There are studs and nuts then to the bulkhead at the inlet to cabin. The whole plastic part then slides out of the way.

Then you just have to undo the hex bolts holding the plastic cam cover down. The one at the back in the middle is a swine as the egr gets in the way id recommend a nuckle joint in your socket set and a mirror. From then on its ok the wiring loom is fairly self explanatory to slide in through the webs in the casting the metal clips snap in as it goes.

From memory at the electrical connector end there is another bracket mounted off the same nut so just need to temporarily dismount that.

I'd say couple of hours or so start to finish nothing major just fiddly on the bolts at the back.

Well the loom finally arrived yesterday so missed the sunny Saturday weather. Hope I can install on Friday or Sat this weekend...

Finally managed to pull the error codes - got the 18075 fault code logged, which seems consistent with other people's injector wiring loom failures.

I spent an hour this morning attempting to get to the loom before the heavens opened and I was forced to retreat. Damn it's fiddly in there! Will try again when it stops raining.

Fixed. Problem solved! Looks like it has been done before too the gasket had sealant on it which I removed with a scalpel and alcohol cleaner to leave a proper clean dry real. Gasket itself looks perfect. Took me about 2.5 hours. Engine internals look as good as new to me. No more misfire and dash warning lights gone off. All is well again!

Nice one dan. Good to see another problem solved fairly cheaply.i do wonder how often garages opt for changing the injectors at massive cost. In fact i remember seeing a bulletin in elsawin warning of the amount of returned injectors which were no fault found when inspected.

Hope you get many miles of trouble free motoring, ive been clear for nearly 15,000 miles now.

All the best.

Gary

It's a great feeling when you fix a problem. Almost the same as when you find something you have misplaced and have been looking for a long time, and there it is. Thanks for sharing.

I think it's important that on a forum people follow up and post their successes- otherwise everything fills up with how problematic the wee little A2 is but with no resolution!

I just hope this thread helps the next TDi owner who develops a misfire.
